Huron is a city located in Beadle County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,893. It is the county seat of Beadle CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.6 km² (8.3 mi²). 21.3 km² (8.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.56% water.

Huron has been assigned the ZIP codes 57350 and 57399 and the FIPS place code 31060.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,893 people, 5,263 households, and 3,047 families residing in the city. The population density is 559.3/km² (1,448.5/mi²). There are 5,872 housing units at an average density of 276.2/km² (715.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.92% White, 0.96% African American, 1.29% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,263 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.1% are non-families. 37.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,097, and the median income for a family is $40,234. Males have a median income of $27,027 versus $19,921 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,275. 12.4% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.4% of those under the age of 18 and 13.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
