Brookings County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 28,220. Its county seat is Brookings6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,084 km² (805 mi²). 2,058 km² (794 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.28% water.

The county is divided into twenty-three townships: Afton, Alton, Argo, Aurora, Bangor, Brookings, Elkton, Eureka, Lake Henricks, Lake Sinai, Laketon, Medary, Oak Lake, Oakwood, Oslo, Parnell, Preston, Richland, Sherman, Sterling, Trenton, Volga, Winsor.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,220 people, 10,665 households, and 6,217 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 11,576 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.36% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.90% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,665 households out of which 28.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.00% are married couples living together, 6.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.70% are non-families. 29.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.80% under the age of 18, 26.80% from 18 to 24, 24.30% from 25 to 44, 17.30% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.20 males.
