Corson County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 4,181. Its county seat is McIntosh6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,551 km² (2,529 mi²). 6,405 km² (2,473 mi²) of it is land and 146 km² (56 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.23% water.

Townships

The county is divided into eleven townships: Custer, Delaney, Lake, Mission, Pleasant Ridge, Prairie View, Ridgeland, Rolling Green, Sherman, Wakpala, and Watauga; and four areas of unorganized territory: Central Corson, Lemmon No. 2, Northeast Corson, and West Corson.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,181 people, 1,271 households, and 949 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,536 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 37.19% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 60.80% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 2.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,271 households out of which 38.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.80% are married couples living together, 19.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.30% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.29 and the average family size is 3.82.

In the county, the population is spread out with 36.90% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 24.30% from 25 to 44, 18.50% from 45 to 64, and 10.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 102.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.80 males.
