Stanley County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 2,772. Its county seat is Fort Pierre6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,929 km² (1,517 mi²). 3,738 km² (1,443 mi²) of it is land and 191 km² (74 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.86% water.

Townships

The county is divided into three areas of unorganized territory: Lower Brule, North Stanley, and South Stanley.

There are 1,277 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.04% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 4.91% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,111 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 26.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 101.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.
