Milnes

I have no issue with a Category:Milnes. I didn't do that myself simply because (1) I wasn't sure I could just create a catefory and (2) I'm not sure how useful it is given that there may only be a dozen Milnes (at a stretch) that ever make it into Wikipedia. But thanks, anyway.

Now to see how you do this fancy editing thing on your talk page...  :-)

Castro

Well I figured I could certify the Kapil Rfc as I was the victim of his ire. As he got me got me muddled up with someone else's edits I figure he is just lashing out without even checking things out, and as it could have been any user a new user might have left wikipedia for ever etc. Anyway you could also put this (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Fidel_Castro&diff=prev&oldid=13763681) as my attempt to mediate with him Sunday night. Que le vaya bien, SqueakBox 01:19, May 17, 2005 (UTC)

Kapil

I'm not fond of RfCs and the like but of course I think Kapil needs to mend his ways. I think you could justifiably have gone straight to arbitration, because let's face it, he's not going to respond to an RfC. These guys don't. Grace Note 11:28, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

sigh It's practically pointless anyway. He'll just come back as a new user. Eventually, editors with good will tire out and they win, simply because they are determined to revert and revert until they have their way.Grace Note 00:18, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

Grace Note

How about telling Grace Note to try and revert intelligently and lay off the Fidel Castro smoking a Cohiba picture, or at least to give a good reason for placing it back on? Gonna watch me closely now, are you? Ooooooh the communist bravado. Have it your way, at least I'm trying to get a NPOV on Fidel Castro while Grace Note keeps acting like a 6-year old. And yes, if I get banned for whatever reason I'll probably just keep reverting it until it's more neutral, it's absolutely preposterous that the positive things muttered about Castro can just remain there (as encyclopaedic content) without so much as a good (neutral) source. Grace Note hasn't provided a source yet, yet (s)he continues reverting. Sigh, on to continue the revert war with Grace Note, I'm guessing, until a source is provided. Kapil 01:02, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Marxism, marxism and marxian thought

Marxism is an ideology often taken to worship Karl Marx the individual. marxism is an ideology which recognises Marx's importance, but isn't interested in leader worship. marxian thought is even more so. Fifelfoo 03:00, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Sorry

I have this habit of being too cryptic. I also talk to myself a lot. I think the two things are connected. What I meant by the blank space was that I didn't feel I needed to comment on KT's rant. He'd proved my point. I do feel sorry for the guy, but not enough to think he should be allowed to continue. I've said enough, and am withdrawing from the discussion, but I will be interested to see what happens in the end. --Mothperson 01:31, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Reactie

Lima districts

Hi Viajero. Thanks, I like to follow that general rule, too. However, I renamed the district articles for the sake of uniformity. In many provinces outside of the Lima Province, districts are not the smallest subdivision, there are even smaller political subdivisions called ciudades, caceríos or anexos, which often have the same name as the districts they belong to. For example, the city of Huancayo does not cover all of Huancayo district, therefore it is necessary to create different articles; in this case the most logical solution would be naming the city's article as "Huancayo" and the district's article as "Huancayo District".

Since in Spanish the district's full names are Distrito de ... and since it would be confusing to have district articles with unstandardized names ("Villa el Salvador" & "Huancayo District", both being articles about districts) I decided to standardize the names of the ca. 1820 districts in Peru and make all of them end with the word District. Greetings, --Tuomas hello 00:23, May 23, 2005 (UTC)

As I said before, the districts' official names in Spanish (Distrito de Villa El Salvador) should also be taken into consideration. If all articles were to have the simplest name possible, then why do many articles about US counties (for example, Wakulla County, Florida) have such "long" names? Probably because their official full name is x County (article Wakulla is empty). The same thing happens here in Peru with districts. By the way, users in the Spanish-language wikipedia have taken the same step and renamed all articles to Distrito de x'. I doubt that writing in a forum with just one participant would have much sense. That's what your talk page is for. --Tuomas hello 17:21, May 23, 2005 (UTC)

Deleting subcats

I think the key is nominating multiple categories simultaneously (as I've done for the terrorist cats). Some of them weren't subcats of cat:terrorism, and it is not always applicable to automatically delete subcats on all occasions. Your idea seems a good one in principle, but I cannot presently think of a good way to word it for adding to deletion policy. Yours, Radiant_* 07:31, May 23, 2005 (UTC)

Although a few months ago I must admit I redirected a few opera articles from their common English names to their original titles, I have now seen the light. Fujimori & Alan Garcia

FWIW, I want you to know that I didn't come up with that text about Fujimori wanting to arrest Alan G; it was in the article that Messhermit spun off -- I assume he added it -- and I only did him the courtesy of restoring all of his text to the AF article. As an aside, I find it highly ironical that most people then supported his arrest, since he now appears to be the leading candidate to become the next president of Peru. -- Viajero | Talk 17:47, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

  • I believe that it is almost universal in underdeveloped countries (with a few exceptions) that the outgoing leaders have no support and most citizens would like to see them in jail, because they end up not delivering on their promises (as most politicians). And then, after a few short years and another underperforming leader, old leaders have a shot to come back. Exactly what is happening with Alan Garcia and perhaps even Fujimori (in this coming election or in the next).--AAAAA 02:38, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi

Good to hear from you again. I don't know how much help I can be... I'm just stopping by (not returning as an active, regular contributor) to fix only some of the more egregious problems that I can spot. So whatever influence I had in the past is almost certainly gone... I wish you luck with the case, though I wouldn't expect it. The function of the Arbcom seems to be protecting users like Trey Stone and driving off users who try to strive for higher standards, rejecting the idea of Wikipedia as some sort of social club. 172 13:25, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

Take a look at SqueakBox's user contribution history. He's applying for assistance from Sam Spade... I didn't know that Sam Spade had a "detective agency" until now. I saw that and finally realized that Wikipedia is hopeless. 172 20:05, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

Peace --

I certainly appreciate the sentiments ... it's just a strange time, I think. Even after all this media coverage about the Qur'an thing, I saw some on-line poll today that said that 67% of the public had no problem with what had been happening at Gitmo. That kind of willful suspension of disbelief makes me gasp.

I think perhaps there is a mindset that cries "anti-Americanism" in the face of any problem like this, but I liked to think such people were on the fringe... I also like to think that great figures from our past like John Quincy Adams Lincoln and Harry Truman would have been proud be called "anti-Americans" by such, and would draw the line when people are treated like animals, have their religion desecrtated, and are beaten to death by our military.

You've seen the Bagram article, I know, but ...note too that US citizens have been abucted and tortured now under the connivance of the FBI...

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/052405Y.shtml

This, like the Bush/Blair memo confirming that intelligence had been "fixed" to justify invasion in Iraq, was essentially a non-story in the mainstream US media. Like the Witch sprinkled poppies over all the editors-in-chief or something.

Such developments make me think outlets like WP are particularly important nowabouts.

Keep in touch,

Brandon Yusuf Toropov www.JesustheMuslim.com

Hi again -- I did look at the rendition WP article, and I'd like very much to read the Jane Mayer article in the NEW YORKER that you mention. Alas, I can't find it hooking up to anything accessible via Google. You wouldn't have a copy (or link) you could email to me?
Many thanks for the reference. yusuf.toropov@gmail.com BrandonYusufToropov 00:00, 30 May 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the ref, I have added that article to my watchlist and am about halfway through the New Yorker article. If you have access to the NY Times, check out Bob Herbert's Memorial Day column today, some highlights of which are:
It's now known that many of the individuals swept up in and confined at Guantanamo and elsewhere were innocent. The administration says it has evidence it could use to prove the guilt of detainees currently at Guantanamo, but much of the evidence is secret, and therefore cannot be revealed. This is where the war on terror meets Never-Never Land.... (Column continues:) "How," asked Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, "can our State Department denounce countries for engaging in torture while the C.I.A. secretly transfers detainees to the very same countries for interrogation?"
Like almost everyone else in the mainstream media, however, Herbert is apparently not emotionally ready to close his eyes, think of England, and type the word "torture" on his keyboard without deleting it (unless he's quoting someone braver than he). We're still dealing with problems of "abuse" and "humiliation," it seems, as well as the cases of people who were "even killed." What other word besides "torture" could adequately describe, for instance, the rankest of the outrages at Bagram, I am unable to say.
Same issue of the Times has a story (Page A12), IN RISING NUMBERS, LAWYERS HEAD FOR GUANTANAMO BAY, that purports to document some reduction in blood-lust, commensurate with exposure to attorneys from outside. Not surprising, but what of the concentration camps discussion of whose existence remains crimethink? BrandonYusufToropov 18:00, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

Konspire2b

Just wanted to ask about your recatorisation of Konspire2b from Peer to peer to File sharing programs -- my understanding is that the two categories are orthogonal (i.e. centralised programs can share files (e.g. FTP) and P2P systems exist that don't share files, (e.g. DNS)) -- shouldn't we list both categories rather than choosing one or the other? At the moment it doesn't appear in the P2P category, despite being such a program. Ojw 18:19, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Layout fix Amsterdam

Why did you fix the layout of the article on Amsterdam? Was there something wrong, or did you just not like it? Ilse@ 21:18, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

What is going on?

Yes of course, I copied your profile a bit, however, I wanted to show you that I show the same solidarity you do to this site. Why are you guys deleting things?

I have totally brought this page up from almost zero. I've submitted photos, why do you guys have problems with the mothers being on the page?

you need to watch the videos in here http://www.zulmaaguiar.com/Juarez/

honestly look @ least at the 20 MB file... sorry don't have a smaller one right now. but believe me, I'm trying to be as unbiased as possible. I did not delete his information? he's deleting my information?

Also why do you make the page look less legit by moving where the sources are quoted as... I want the text to have the "out link" so to speak.

the way you do it makes it look like its in the footnote. most of all, your last edit "viajero" when you restored it to Hajor's deleted a huge section of footnotes of a bibliography that encourages people to read more. Are you guys working for the Mexican government or what? Why are you defending the murderers? Are you one of those that calls the mothers crying babies, who should preoccupy themselves with other issues other than the murder of their daughters. How would you feel if your daughter was murdered and the police just photocopied the newspaper article and inserted it into your daughters case file and called it a day.

I'm not even telling the audience exactly everything I believe about what is going on. I'm just hinting them to investigate on their own.

This stuff about "rehashing" that fox keeps saying is ridiculous. Somebody is misinforming the president. The murders are totally happening. Tell that to the mothers and children of the women that have been killed this year. tell that to the 7 year old girl that was murdered. The women are being consumed the way we consume the products from maquiladoras, and then dispose of them as if they were trash. The non profits and activists that have come up since the deaths of the women are being accused of scaring people into living in Juarez, they blame the mothers, not the government or the murderers themselves. I know the police has been trying to help, but who is to say that they have not botched investigations? The sad truth is that they have. In many cases, they have the DNA of the murderers and still yet they can't come up with who did it? How is this possible? You tell me?

I am intrigued by your perception of me. Probably spot on. Things have calmed down anyway at Rios Montt. I felt that eventually 172 allowed me to add my material. I am as POV as the next person, just not normally with Latin American politics. ... and for the spot-on references. The "statelessness" point was a chillng one that I had not considered in those terms.

The Qur'an abuse article was a featured news story today on the WP homepage, which made my heart quicken. :)

Do you suppose there is a current-events-driven article to be developed regarding AI's description of Gitmo as the "gulag of our times"? Or the Bush human rights record in general? Curious for your thoughts. BrandonYusufToropov 13:39, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi again -- the abduction of the German Muslim to Guantanamo is certainly a terrifying story. Thanks so much for passing it along.
Re: the human rights piece: I'm sure you're right. Yet if there is a hard news event to connect these things to, there is sometimes a better chance for high visibility. (We had POV battles at the Qur'an desecration page, too, but facts and new revelations got in the way of the disruptions.) I guess I'm still waiting for another topic offering similar clarity, similarly demonstrable evidence of contempt for international law, and similar relevance to the average curious person. Spam blocking

Hi Viajero,

I have to admit I'm more in favour of removing spam links than most people, but your 1 year block on User:62.195.252.195 for consistently adding a spam link to Amsterdam caught my attention. It seems a bit strong, given that they only had two warnings. Is there some prior history here that isn't so obvious? -- Solipsist 19:33, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi, as you can see from that users contributions [3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=62.195.252.195), their only activity on Wikipedia over the past year has been to try to add that link to the Amsterdam page; by my count twenty times. Each time it gets reverted by another editor. There was also some discussion about this issue on the Talk page in which he/she took part, but evidently in vain. HTH, -- Viajero | Talk 20:00, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
That's what I figured. I think you were right to block - its just that a full year block is a longer than the arbitration committee typically hands out, even for cases of egregious disruption and vandalism. The typical 24 hr block probably wouldn't work as they are only an occaisional visitor, but it looks like they would notice a 1 month block to start with and you could escalate from there. -- Solipsist 20:14, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've noticed Kapil raising his head again, via your notices, thank you. I dunno - what's the budget this year for rope? I did believe sooner or later, but I forgot how much rope it might take. I regret that I don't care enough about his inane May "personal attacks" on me to go screaming to RfC on a separate issue, but I do keep you in mind, and if there's anything I can do, let me know. This must get very wearing. --Mothperson 22:11, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Didn't mean to be anon.

Thanks for the tip on the signature; I wasn't aware that's how you do it and I'll use it in the future. Nonetheless, I don't see why it's an issue. Clearly I you were able to find me. And even if you weren't, so what?

Ed has been kind enough to nominate me for an adminship

...which I think will go a long way toward resolving unproductive disputes pages he and I both edit. Anyone who is interested in voting one way or the other is invited to the discussion here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/BrandonYusufToropov#.5B.5BUser:BrandonYusufToropov.5D.5D). Many, instead of implying all?

I note in Corporate media you removed the word "some" from "Corporate media is a term used by some media commentators........" It now reads as if all US media commentators use the term to imply that the mainstream media is controlled by large multinationals (which manipulate and filter out news that does not fit their corporate agenda). Do you think media commentators working for Rupert Murdoch's media empire (one example) would agree with such an assertion? Would you agree that I inset the word "many" where the word "some" previously appeared? Moriori 23:11, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

Opera titles

Salomé (opera) should be returned to Salome (opera). DrG; previously unsigned

Yes, I agree with DrG. It should be moved to Salome (opera), but an existing redirect prevents us common rabble from moving it. --BaronLarf 21:01, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

Operettas

What's your opinion on operettas? I view them as a subcategory of operas, but User:DrG has changed the category hierarchy of Category:Operetta to be a separate entity and has also created a new wikiproject (Wikipedia:WikiProject Operetta (of which he is the sole member) to deal with them. If you don't feel as strongly about this as I do, I'll let it go because I don't want to create more conflict with DrG if it's pointless. Thanks much. --BaronLarf 19:56, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
