Request for page un-protection

There is consensus on the talk page of 2004_U.S._Election_controversies_and_irregularities that the page should be unprotected so that we can add information to it and restructure it. There is a deluge of information on this topic, and we'd like to keep pace with it. Thanks. Kevin Baas | talk 18:48, 2004 Nov 9 (UTC)

I second this request. Keeping protected articles that are effectively "in progress" for a protracted period of time is detrimental. There are enough of us around, during daylight hours at least, to overcome the challenge that vandalism presents. Zen Master 19:30, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)
No problem, it's done. -- Schnee 19:31, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I don't care about politics, or your particular views.... but that article is a MAJOR problem, and a major vandalism target because of it. Do the right thing and remove that listing from In the News. Also, please do NOT use "rollback" on my edits ever again. I am not some common vandal, and using rollback is not only a disrespect, but also is not explaining your reverts. -- Netoholic @ 23:42, 2004 Nov 10 (UTC)

I don't see why it's disrespectful; it's just the easiest and most convenient way to do just that (revert). -- Schnee 23:43, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

You are now in violation of the Three revert rule on Template:In the news (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Template:In_the_news&action=history)]. Please respect other contributors by discontinuing your edit war. -- Netoholic @ 00:06, 2004 Nov 11 (UTC)

*shrugs* As if that matters. FWIW, if you want to become technical, I didn't revert anything at all; *you* and Andris were the ones who reverted, and I merely reinstated Neutrality's version after you did. -- Schnee 15:37, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Vandalism in progress page

Hi. You changed a lot of the entries on the Vandalism in progress page to templates in order to save space. Unfortunately, the wikipedia software only expands templates for the first few instances on a page; the result was that after the first few entries, the posts on the page simply said "Template:Vandal", rather than listing the IP address and so on (see the page before I reverted (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Vandalism_in_progress&oldid=7331210#169.151.1.213)). I've reverted those changes. Mateo SA | talk 06:48, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. Yeah, I noticed that as well now; it's a known bug in Mediawiki that's fixed in cvs, so hopefully we'll be able to reinstate those templates soon once cvs becomes stable (or the fix is backported). -- Schnee 15:37, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Keeping "In the news" NPOV and credible

Following various attempts to add partisan and fringe stories to Template:In the news, I've proposed a new criterion to keep such stuff out. Could you please take a look at Wikipedia talk:In the news section on the Main Page and let me know what you think? -- ChrisO 17:19, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

  1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
  2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. It's important to know, even if you choose to do anything so I don't keep asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit&section=new)| talk) 14:39, Dec 3, 2004 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? Hi, I noted your recent revert to Clitoris. Please read the talk page on this; some of us are temporarily agreeing to a period of linking to the image as part of trying to reach an agreement that satisfies all parties. There is no intention to permanently remove the inline image; this agreement expires first thing Monday am. Please take this into account when viewing edits on that page. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 00:35, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Locking the page is an abuse of your admin powers, Schneelocke. I understand that you are fiercely opposed to all views but your own (a view you would be aware that I share, had you bothered reading the discussion before imposing your own POV on the page) but it is a breach of policy for an admin to abuse their powers this way. Image reverted from Wolf

Hello

I am just curious about the logic behind the revert of the added image to wolf Considering that it would be very hard to add a more modern image about trapping/hunting of wolves (for obvious reasons) I find that the picture has merit.P.S. 14:35, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

That was mostly a gut reaction to an image I found rather offensive - I don't think there should be any images relating to wolf hunting in the article, no matter whether modern or not. But that's just my opinion, of course, and it may not have been entirely justified to just revert like that. Sorry about that. -- Schneelocke (cheeks clone) [[]] 01:06, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Infobox templates

What you should do then is one single template for all chemical elements, not one template for each element. If you need help on this, I can help Kieff | Talk 03:00, Dec 26, 2004 (UTC)

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Obviously, since the data contained in the infoboxes varies for each element, you need a separate template for each element; and while it would theoretically be possible to use a massively-parametrized template for *all* elements, this would also mean that each element's infobox would have to contain the same entries (with missing data being left as blank fields), which would be highly undesirable, especially as far as the isotope sections are concerned (which have, by the very nature of the data contained therein, a varying number of entries). The current system, which uses further templates to create the actual infoboxes, is, I think, reasonably well thought-out and flexible while also providing some user- (and especially newbie-)friendliness. If you have suggestions for changes to these templates etc., please discuss them at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Elements. -- Schneelocke (cheeks clone) [[]] 03:04, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Well, good point about the lots of parameters, but I really don't think using a template that uses several other templates is a good idea. There should be some other generalized option. Kieff | Talk 03:17, Dec 26, 2004 (UTC)
I don't see why not. Mediawiki is powerful enough to allow this (and without overly big costs in terms of database/cpu overhead, too); and also, templates using templates are not that uncommon, anyway. If you have a system that allows you to do things in a nice and logical way without too many kludges, why not use it? If you have another idea, feel free to discuss it on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Elements, of course (which really is the proper place). -- Schneelocke (cheeks clone) [[]] 03:20, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Personal feelings...

Personally I have to agree with the ex-co-founder of Wiki-Pedia. This site is much too rejectful by arrogance, due to the fact people, such as yourselves, tend to protect the content of a page, as though it were 'their' property. When individuals who've actually had more experience in the field, and of the matter could provide way more 'on-site' intelligence. When instead, it is not my property, it is not your property, it is nobody's property, but the entire world! I guess I'm a loner in some ways about these feelings, such that, I'm sick of contributing some of what might actually benefit future generations *shrugs*. Most of my contributions were not 'altered', more like totally erased!

PS FUCK IT!

Stop making a fool of yourself and and read up on WP:NPA. -- Schnee (cheeks clone) 07:16, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

They were not 'personal attacks'. My scipt kiddie addition information, was actually factual. Most kids attack web hosts out of a void (psycological problems). My Visual Basic addition posts yielded very insightful information towards the language, a 'newbie' might have been able to use. Perhaps you people don't like details, merely to be VAGUE AS FUCK! If you can't handle 'real' science and experience from 'the field', then maybe you all have a problem, and not myself. Either way, I'm done with this community. Sort this shit out amongst yourselves or whatever...

PS Fuck you very much, for nothing, goodnight!

Monkey Island

I'm pretty sure you'll find that there is a drowning easter egg in the Secret of Monkey Island (the first game). After Guybrush has stolen the idol, Fester throws him into the sea tied to the idol. If you leave the game here for 10 seconds, Guybrush drowns. I think that possibly a similar thing happens when you try to get the figurehead from the Mad Monkey in the second game, but I'm really not sure about that. Any way, there definitely is a drowning-based easter egg in the first game. Drw25 13:22, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

You deleted a redirect from this to huge cardinal. Sadly, I do not think there is enough information on the internet to compile even a stub. Maybe, but personally, I think it'd be nicer if we just left it as it is now. An article that actually does not exist has one definite advantage: it's clearly recognizable as such, so if someone happens to come across it who has an actual definition of superhuge cardinals, they're much more likely to put it in there. -- Schnee (cheeks clone) 21:09, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

      • NEVER use š or š for s-caron. Numeric character references always refer to Unicode code points, and U+009A is a reserved control character, *not* s-caron. It might appear to work sometimes due to a fluke and crappy workarounds for compatibility with a Windows bug, but should definitely not be relied upon. Use the real Unicode number, š. The same goes for the other characters in the Windows CP1252 extended range (see ISO 8859-1#Windows-1252 ).
      • For the moment the only named character references that will work in links are the ISO 8859-1 ones (s-caron does not appear in ISO 8859-1). Stick with the numbers for now.

Could you take a look at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Helium if you have time? :) --mav 02:50, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sure, no problem! ^^ -- Schnee (cheeks clone) 16:00, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

wikipedia:WikiProject Chemicals

Hi Schee, I was so free as to move your name under participation from an action list for work on improving chemicals articles to the now active Chemicals Wikiproject, one of the Chemistry wikiprojects. That old action list is now much updated, and being worked on, so it don't hold participants names any more. Gladly I invite you to further participate on the work. If this name move is incorrect, my apologies, and feel free to delete you from that wikiproject. Wim van Dorst 08:26, 2005 Apr 13 (UTC).

Naw, it's fine. Thanks! ^^ -- Schnee (cheeks clone) 09:33, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

More Quarto design magic!

See m:WQ/3 for more excitement. that's the internal layout. We need new icons, new footer and header images for the media section (panoramas), and perhaps some background images or a new style for the masthead logo on pg. 1. ...plus anything else that strikes your fancy! Sorry I was afk today just after pinging you. There was a massive VfD debate I got caught up in and had to be sure I explained myself properly... +sj + 04:21, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Just wondering, but... are you sure you got the right talk page? I'm not involved with the Quarto at all really, and I can't remember you getting in touch with me, either (unless I know you but don't associate the name "Sj" with you). ^^ -- Schnee (cheeks clone) 12:13, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Image on copper element page

Schnee, I was wondering if you could check out Image:Cu-TableImage.png, which I believe should have 34 neutrons on copper rather than 35. Is it possible for you to fix it? I checked in the CRC handbook, and indeed copper-64 is radioactive as it states in the table, but copper-63 is the common stable isotope. I would never have noticed except for the comments left recently by someone (see the history for the copper page). BTW, those images are fabulous, and only 6k! Amazing! Walkerma 16:00, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment. ^^ It's been a while really since I made this image, but if I recall correctly, then the number of neutrons for all these images was based on the average atomic weight of the element, not the number of neutrons in the most abundant stable isotope. Copper has an atomic weight of 63,546 u, so it's leaning slightly more towards 35 neutrons. ^_~ That being said, I do agree that this may be confusing and maybe should be changed, but I think it'd be better to discuss this on WikiProject Elements instead of making a change to a single article (and thus introducing inconsistencies in the ways the element articles handle these things). -- Schnee (cheeks clone) 19:39, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for explaining. Since the elements project is pretty dead, I mentioned it to the Isotopes Wikiproject people.

Re: password matches

all the accounts listed on this page have been created solely for the purpose of trolling

How can you be sure of that? Just because they share the same password? Or is it because they've been caught vandalizing? And if the latter, then why the need for the password matches at all?

Typogfk 19:17, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

I'm copying that to the page's talk page - that's probably a better place to discuss these things. -- Schnee (cheeks clone) 19:20, 31 May 2005 (UTC)
