Hi Mike, welcome to Wikipedia! I converted your graph of Alexa traffic to PNG format. Jpeg tends to be unsuitable for line drawings, especially those with only a few colors; the conversion actually resulted in a 99.6% smaller file! Check out the policy page section on format, as well as this tutorial for some tips on converting to PNG in the future. Nice graph, by the way. Happy editing! -- Wapcaplet 21:00, 2 May 2004 (UTC)

SubStub

Hi Mike. I hope you take the substub related snickering on the village pump easy. We're just having fun, and no harm is intended. Personally, I don't see the need for a substub, but then I don't mind having one either. Thanks for your contributions -- Chris 73 | Talk 22:13, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi Mike, I'm not sure what this edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump&diff=4774452&oldid=4773997) was and I'm not sure if my edit fixed it. Can you check to see nothing was lost as I can't tell what you were trying to add. I expect it's the edit conflict bug again. Angela. 23:46, Jul 21, 2004 (UTC)

Once again, my answer is on my talk. Ilyanep (Talk) 18:18, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi Mike, I've been thinking about the substub idea. I think it is a nice alternative for the anti-deletionists, but I also think that the people using that template need to be aware that there a large number of people who will disagree with it and simply delete such pages. However, there are many pages that come very close to be CSDs but just hang around unimproved forever so it could be useful for those. However, I'm not sure if this just duplicates what the Special:Shortpages list already tells you. Angela. 18:59, Jul 22, 2004 (UTC)

Hey--thanks for making my Section 8 article into a substub. I didn't know that they existed; I'm going to edit and expand the article in the future, but don't have time now, and I hope that the substub message, being a kind of confession of inadequacy, will convince people not to erase it. Alphabets / Writing System categorization

(also assuming that you are identical with 67.175.91.111, see [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=67.175.91.111))

You recently added Category:Alphabetic writing systems to Ge'ez language, Devanagari, Baybayin and others.

To the best of my knowledge they don't belong into Category:Alphabetic writing systems, but into Category:Abugida writing system (see also Abugida), with the possible exception of Ge'ez language, which may be a syllabary.

I called for help at Category_talk:Writing_systems and other places, to cleanup the writing system category tree, but got no answers so far.

Please comment on that talk page on how to proceed.

"Too Big"

I reverted the following edit by you:

19:49, 2004 Jul 20 (hist) List of people by name: A (top) [rollback]

It

  1. blanked a page that has a well established role in the workings of the List of people by name tree
  2. was applied to a page
    1. whose markup has 104 characters and
    2. whose rendered text is 251 characters.

Beyond that,

  • there has never in the past been a suggestion that 32K is an "absolute max", and
  • your concern with it sounds like either
    • a misunderstanding on your part or
    • a personal commitment to doing operations on large pages that no one has seriously considered before.

I hope you'll include me in consulting with your WP colleagues about whatever it is you think you're accomplishing.

CSS problem

I've been creating a new custom user CSS which I call "Neptune". The background code is:

/* Main body */
#content {
    margin: 2.8em 0 0 12.2em;
    padding: 0em 1em 1.5em 1em;
    background: #0099ff;
    border: 1px solid #00ffff;
    border-right: none;
    line-height: 1.5em;
    position: relative;
    z-index: 2;
}

This is supposed to make the background blue. The weird part is, on the main (or article) namespace, the background is white. On every other namespace (Wikipedia, Template, User, etc.) the background is blue (which is correct). All the other CSS code works correctly in all namespaces. How do I fix this? The entire code can be found here. Mike Storm (Talk) 21:31, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I guess it's just the specifity of the selector, background: #0099ff !important; or a more specific selector should work. -- Gabriel Wicke 00:39, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

"Join the Cleanup Department, but I'm not sure if you have to be a sysop before you can do that."

There's no sysop requirement to do much of anything around here, short of the actual dirty work of blocking vandals and deleting pages. There's a lot of other cleanup work that needs to be done, like wikifying unformatted new pages. -- Cyrius| 19:36, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The Carpetbaggers

You added a POV message, but apparently didn't start the discussion on the Talk page. The article (which is mine) does try to put the book into cultural context, and perhaps puts too much emphasis on that. I'm not at all averse to tuning it. However, I am interested in knowing what specific problems you see. Are you old enough to remember what a "blockbuster" it was at the time? Not quite in the same category as "Tropic of Cancer," but more shocking than "Peyton Place," I think, although I should try to find references to it at the time that would support that statement. Suggest you start the discussion in Talk:The Carpetbaggers rather than replying directly to me, even though I suspect we'll be the only two discussing it... Telling people they disgust you is far meaner than saying "I'm having a problem with this user and I think he's at fault". -- Cyrius| 14:01, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

First, calm down. (see Wikipedia:Staying cool when the editing gets hot) doing exercise always calms me down when I'm pissed off. Be aware of Wikiqette.

Right, I don't really give a toss what you think of me. Let's sort this out sensibly. I admit that I may have escalated this confrontation unnecessarily, but *you* are not going to intimidate me. I'm big enough to look after myself.

We need to establish a consensus of talk:substub. The best way to do this is to have an organised debate. That way, rambling flame wars do not start up, and the whole discussion is much more clearer. That was what I was trying to establish. Would you care to propose a structure for such a debate?

And if you want to become a sysop consider this; Wikipedia is a meritocracy, experienced users have more weight than newbies; users with a reputation for sensibility carry more weight than flamers. I suggest you serve time as a new page catcher special:newpages, catching all the nonsense that comes in from anon IPs, and you want to get into WP:WIWO or the cleanup squad and vote on WP:VFD to gain a better impression of Wikipedia:Maintenance. If you do that, you may earn the respect of others, and if you get enough you may become a sysop. Emperor of Wikipedia is probably out of your depth though. Dunc_Harris| 17:20, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I'm not mad, but I am ticked off at you. Nor do I wish to intimidate you, and please do not put words in my mouth.
Are you accusing me of starting rambling flame wars? Because that is not what I do. There is already an organized structure in place - the voting sections.
You are correct about one thing - sensible posts do carry more weight than flames. However, you are mistaken - newbie users can edit pages with just as much authority as experienced ones. Furthermore, I am not a newbie - I have done all the things that you have listed. I know how to gain good impressions from people, and I know what is required to become a sysop: respect. So far, you have gained zero respect from me. And I take great offense to you saying that I want to become "emperor of Wikipedia".
So far, I believe that I have acted in a much more courteous, respectful, and Wikipedian manner than you have, and I do not appreciate you talking down to me, like I am some idiotic newbie, when all proof shows otherwise. Get off your high horse. MikeStorm 18:01, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
A person so easily offended by advice does not inspire respect. -- Cyrius| 18:57, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Advice from a person who has humiliated me without cause on Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration and who has wasted several hours of my time forcing me to write a defense of myself on that page is not very valuable to me. MikeStorm 19:00, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Grow a tougher skin. Your continuing ability to misunderstand people's intentions is what started this mess. -- Cyrius| 19:07, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I did not start this mess, it was Duncharris' misunderstanding of how talk pages work and the fact that he ignored my helpful (3 of them!) explanations of how they work. Also, I though that you had removed yourself from "this mess". If you have to comment about something, then comment about substubs - that is the only subject on which I will take you seriously. MikeStorm 19:14, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
That you think your abrasive comments are helpful seems to be part of the problem as well. Telling someone you aren't going to take them seriously is no way to get them to agree with you. -- Cyrius| 19:22, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
My comments are not abrasive, and you won't agree with me no matter what I say, which is just one reason that I won't take you seriously. MikeStorm 19:28, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

A word of advice: If you politely and promptly remove your nomination from WP:RFA, you'll be seen in a better light on your next attempt. There's plenty of work to be done, and very little of it requires sysop status. Good luck! Cribcage 02:35, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Substubs

I will be starting a survey at Template talk:Substub about what should be done with that template. I put in a placeholder on the arguments in favor of substubs, but you probably will want to make those arguments yourself. --Michael Snow 20:13, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Latin

Hi, I don't really speak much Latin but vandalism looks pretty much the same in any language so you don't need to be fluent to find things to revert or delete. I was just looking after it while it was a small Wikipedia but I resigned when a few new admins turned up who were fluent in it. You might want to ask Adam Bishop how he learnt it instead of me since he is a sysop there too. Angela. 21:02, Aug 9, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Mike, I learned Latin various ways, but mostly through taking a Latin class in university. We used Wheelock as well. Before that, I had a Latin dictionary and tried to learn on my own, but taking the class was a lot more helpful. I'm not fluent in Latin though - I never had the opportunity to take the advanced Latin class, so we only got through half the text book (on my own, I am still only at chapter 35). This summer I also took a review class that involved a ton of reading and translating, which was difficult (like being beaten with a Latin shovel, I guess) but being completely immersed in it really helped. I would suggest you keep working with Wheelock, and find some original Latin texts to read on a subject you are interested in. You can also help out on the Latin wikipedia, it's good practise for translating English to Latin. Adam Bishop 21:32, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Change of substubs to stubs

I have stopped, so that we can conduct the survey. Please keep in mind that these are, by your own definition, stubs, so it is not necessarily right or wrong to have one message or the other. I was primarily seeing whether the category was growing faster than I could cut it down, which it is. This indicates to me that it will very quickly outgrow any potential usefulness, just like Category:Stub, except perhaps to people with high-speed connections or the patience to wait for such an unwieldy page to load. By the way, I didn't just change messages, I also occasionally improved the articles when I could (that's what you wanted, isn't it?). Also, it is hardly vandalism to change from one template (whose use is disputed) to another very similar template, so please leave such accusations out of your messages. --Michael Snow 23:48, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

If substubs are a kind of stub, I'm not sure exactly why my edits need to be "fixed". As I've said, one message seems just about as good as the other in that regard. So I don't see anything wrong with my test, but you can change them back if you want. Please do not, however, undo the corrections and improvements I have made. Whether you're grateful for them or not doesn't matter. --Michael Snow 00:11, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Um, you haven't stopped. ··gracefool | 06:49, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)
If you care to look at my contributions, you will find that I have stopped changing substub tags to stubs. Please look more carefully before insinuating that I haven't. --Michael Snow 15:37, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I agree. Michael Snow has stopped. MikeStorm 16:43, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I was talking about Herzog (game), ICO, Coyote Ugly, Batman Returns (video game), which you changed to stubs but have now changed back to substubs. Thanks. Thanks also for adding to Wikipedia:Substub#Real substubs in Wikipedia. ··gracefool | 04:05, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You could also consider that I spent hours working on my end, have had my work "undone" by you, and am quite prepared to see it as no big deal. I was not "undoing" your work, I was modifying it as I thought best. As we tell people when the edit window opens, "If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, do not submit it." I would suggest that you read Wikipedia:Ownership of articles. You don't own any of those articles, nor do you own the substub pages. The community owns Wikipedia, and it will ultimately decide what happens with respect to all of these issues. --Michael Snow 05:42, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

What? Of course I don't own any of those articles. All right, maybe I was a bit surprised when the number of substubs went from 294 to 78, but just please don't do anything like that again without a bit of warning. It would help us all out. MikeStorm 16:26, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Warning would have defeated the purposes of the test. I'm not going to repeat the test, so don't worry. The problem we have right now is that opinions seem to be polarized on whether the substub tag is a good idea or not. We don't have a consensus to keep it, and we don't have a consensus to get rid of it. This makes it difficult to know the best way to proceed. --Michael Snow 16:51, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The Carpetbaggers (2)

Mike, I've been picking away at The Carpetbaggers and it's very different from what it was when you added the NPOV notice to it. The Carpetbaggers was, to put it bluntly, considered borderline-pornographic when it was published. If it offends you to have that stated, then you probably will not like the new article, either. This time, however, I am not asserting it as my own opinion, but quoting the words of the New York Times review that accompanied its publication. I believe that quoting reviews from a well-respected source is well within the bounds of NPOV. I also try to put The Carpetbaggers into context in terms of other books that were being published during those days of the sexual revolution. That section contains some frank language which may offend some but which I think is necessary and appropriate to the subject.

Please take a look at it again, or perhaps consider asking some Wikipedian you trust to take a look at it, and see whether it might be appropriate now to remove the NPOV notice. Dpbsmith (talk) 23:50, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I really don't care if it's pornographic, what I care about is you asserting your own opinion about the author's writing style. You're misinterpreting my complaint. By the way, how is the consensus opinion if the book a "good story and strong plot," when you cited the New York Times review of the book as saying that it was terrible? The "consensus" opinion seems to be more like your opinion. MikeStorm 16:00, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

????? But the current article no longer says anything about its having "a good story and strong plot." I don't believe the present article has any personal comments of mine about the author's writing style. Dpbsmith (talk) 16:51, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Also, the New York Times review of the book did not say simply that it was terrible. The same reviewer in the same review also said "In the sections in which he avoids the lurid, he writes graphically and touchingly; on these pages, his dialogue is moving and his people have the warmth of life." Dpbsmith (talk) 18:13, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Is it possible that you're looking at a cached page instead of the current page? If not, could you tell me which are the statement(s) on the current page where you feel that I am "asserting my own opinion about the author's writing style?" Dpbsmith (talk) 12:17, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Cap Classique

Mike

you made Kaapse Vonkel a hot spot. I'm not sure why; its a brand name which I don't think worthy of a encyclopaedia entry on its own. I can't see it merits more than a sentence: Kaapse Vonkel, brand name of Simonsig winery in South Africa for their Cap Classique sparkling wine, which was the first methode champenois made in South Africa" - but I'm a new boy here so perhaps you could give me a pointer Pontac

Substubs

I'm sorry you object to my creating substubs for the remaining U.S. Senators from California, but with all due respect I'm going to continue to do it. If nothing else, these people will have the correct birth and death dates and an indentifier of why they are meaningful. I believe they are, in themselves, a framework for building larger articles, as are (IMHO) all stubs. Thanks for the note. jengod 22:18, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)

The color is there for a reason

The color in template:Move to Wiktionary is there for a reason. It is in a non-threatening yellow (as apposed to pink in speedy delete or blue in vfd), but it still makes it clear that the page could be moved somewhere else. Please don't make massive changes like that without discussion, especially by using words like "unnecessary", that just makes discussion harder. This color is standardized on all "move to" templates, including Template:Move to Wiktionary, Template:Move to Wikibooks and Template:Move to Wikiquote. If you want to change the color, then discuss on the template talk pages. Norm 15:39, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Shotokan katas

Hi Mike,
I don't know how to respond to you, but it seems that I simply edit your page. A bit strange, but I hope it works.
You said that it is difficult for you to figure yout what my pages are about. Perhaps I am on another planet? I think it is quite self-evident. I am cataloguing each of the 26 Shotokan katas. This is no small task - books have been written on the subject, but I hope to put in a bit of time every now and again and I hope that others will see my work (I have linked to relevant and already existing pages), and I have already outlined the skeleton of this project. So far, each kata has it's own page, with it's Japanese name translated, and a basic structure of what needs to be discussed in each. I have also created a 'See also' page for each, which refers back to the main page defining Kata and Bunkai and also to the Shotokan page, where all 26 Katas have been listed.
I hope this helps and am open to suggestions and assistance.whiskers

Thanks, Mike. Yes, I have been doing quite a bit of work and research on quite a number of subjects and managing to tie them all together with a lot of appropriately positioned links, hence creating a vast net of already existing articles, but put into a new perspective by my stubs or short pieces. I don't know how long I can keep this up, but I do have a number of things I would like to work on yet before I take a break. Thanks, again. RFA

How big of an objection would you have to my removing your RFA? At present, you'd need 92 votes in support to pass, and it seems like the nomination is mostly becoming a lot of bitter and acrimonious sniping, which probably isn't helpful to anyone. Snowspinner 20:01, Sep 13, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Mike. I dont know you, but I have been following the RfA. Don't take it badly. I think you are doing very good work here, and I hope you continue. Don't let other people's stress stress you out. Danny 01:39, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Sorry your nomination didn't go through. If it were up to me I'd let you be a sysop. Better luck next time, I suppose. Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 02:29, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Although it seems I was one of your most outspoken critics, I do think I'd support you next time if you've created a couple articles and don't have any more conflicts like your early history seems to reflect. I really do support substubs, but I understand the complaints against you on that issue. As has been said, don't take it the wrong way. CHL 06:57, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Could use some help with Dooley Wilson

There was a request for an article on Dooley Wilson, so I wrote one. He's the actor and singer who sang "As Time Goes By" in the Humphrey Bogart movie, Casablanca

I'm not very clear on article naming conventions. His name is most commonly given as Dooley Wilson, so that's where I put the article. He was born Arthur Wilson. I've seen his name listed as Arthur Dooley Wilson, Arthur (Dooley) Wilson, and Arthur "Dooley" Wilson. Which of these should be redirects? Do we need redirects for all of them?

I think the article itself is in sorta-OK shape but I'd welcome having someone else take a look at it. Dpbsmith (talk) 12:16, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Wikistress

I misread this as, "Wikimistress!" The Wikipedia is my mistress, but she's not a harsh mistress, unlike the moon. - Two Halves, who should be ashamed of himself!

Thanks for uploading Image:Astrocade.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much, Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 14:08, Nov 7, 2004 (UTC)

No problem. Thanks! Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 17:52, Nov 20, 2004 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

Also:

Kinda funny since they're on your user page, but Image:Alexatraffic.png and Image:Alexatraffic.jpg as well? --Ricky81682 (talk) 09:02, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit&section=new)| talk)

Hi Mike.

Some months ago, you added to What Wikipedia is not a policy about recipes. What is mentionned in this policy is not what I remembered many of the editors agreed upon, so I would be interested in seeing with my eyes the discussion which led to that rule as well as the votes. Thanks. SweetLittleFluffyThing 20:21, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

substubs

Ahoy! I just want to say that it looks like you took a bit of a beating a while ago over Wikipedia:Substub, but I think that the caegory is the best page on Wikipedia for someone like me: I want to find an article that I can really do something to, and the subs are a great way to find them. You made the right choice in the end. humblefool® 03:30, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

substubs (again)

Hi Mike... hope you don't mind me saying this, but I feel pretty much the opposite to Humblefool. Nothing personal, and when substub was created I suspect it was one of the most useful things around. Now, however, I suspect it's had its time. The categorisation of stubs into subgroupings so that editors can find them has largely replaced the reason behind substub existing, in that editors can now find stub articles on their own specialist areas more easily, and, since there are few subcategories with more than a few hundred items, it should be easy for them to assess which articles need work most desperately. Also, categorising stubs and substubs into these subcategories has meant that over the last two months, Category:Substubs has gone from 3000 items to 36. At that level, don't see there's too much point in it any more. I hope you don't take it personally that I am likely to (again) suggest its deletion before too long. Grutness|hello? Missing image

Hi again - thanks for the comments. I was trying not to tread on too many toes - I realise that substubs were (and still are) a delicate subject. Look forward to seeing you at WP:Stub sorting! Grutness...wha? 01:18, 10 May 2005 (UTC)
