Go to Special:Preferences. In the first section (user data) is a nickname field (Your nickname (for signatures):). Enter something like

Hi Mike, I've been thinking about the substub idea. I think it is a nice alternative for the anti-deletionists, but I also think that the people using that template need to be aware that there a large number of people who will disagree with it and simply delete such pages. However, there are many pages that come very close to be CSDs but just hang around unimproved forever so it could be useful for those. Alphabets / Writing System categorization

(also assuming that you are identical with 67.175.91.111, see [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=67.175.91.111))

You recently added Category:Alphabetic writing systems to Ge'ez language, Devanagari, Baybayin and others.

To the best of my knowledge they don't belong into Category:Alphabetic writing systems, but into Category:Abugida writing system (see also Abugida), with the possible exception of Ge'ez language, which may be a syllabary.

I called for help at Category_talk:Writing_systems and other places, to cleanup the writing system category tree, but got no answers so far.

Please comment on that talk page on how to proceed.

CSS problem

I've been creating a new custom user CSS which I call "Neptune". The background code is:

This is supposed to make the background blue. The weird part is, on the main (or article) namespace, the background is white. On every other namespace (Wikipedia, Template, User, etc.) the background is blue (which is correct). All the other CSS code works correctly in all namespaces. How do I fix this? The article (which is mine) does try to put the book into cultural context, and perhaps puts too much emphasis on that. I'm not at all averse to tuning it. However, I am interested in knowing what specific problems you see. Are you old enough to remember what a "blockbuster" it was at the time? Not quite in the same category as "Tropic of Cancer," but more shocking than "Peyton Place," I think, although I should try to find references to it at the time that would support that statement. Latin

Hi, I don't really speak much Latin but vandalism looks pretty much the same in any language so you don't need to be fluent to find things to revert or delete. I was just looking after it while it was a small Wikipedia but I resigned when a few new admins turned up who were fluent in it. You might want to ask Adam Bishop how he learnt it instead of me since he is a sysop there too. Angela. 21:02, Aug 9, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Mike, I learned Latin various ways, but mostly through taking a Latin class in university. We used Wheelock as well. Before that, I had a Latin dictionary and tried to learn on my own, but taking the class was a lot more helpful. I'm not fluent in Latin though - I never had the opportunity to take the advanced Latin class, so we only got through half the text book (on my own, I am still only at chapter 35). This summer I also took a review class that involved a ton of reading and translating, which was difficult (like being beaten with a Latin shovel, I guess) but being completely immersed in it really helped. I would suggest you keep working with Wheelock, and find some original Latin texts to read on a subject you are interested in. You can also help out on the Latin wikipedia, it's good practise for translating English to Latin. Adam Bishop 21:32, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Change of substubs to stubs

I have stopped, so that we can conduct the survey. Please keep in mind that these are, by your own definition, stubs, so it is not necessarily right or wrong to have one message or the other. I was primarily seeing whether the category was growing faster than I could cut it down, which it is. This indicates to me that it will very quickly outgrow any potential usefulness, just like Category:Stub, except perhaps to people with high-speed connections or the patience to wait for such an unwieldy page to load. By the way, I didn't just change messages, I also occasionally improved the articles when I could (that's what you wanted, isn't it?). Also, it is hardly vandalism to change from one template (whose use is disputed) to another very similar template, so please leave such accusations out of your messages. --Michael Snow 23:48, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

If substubs are a kind of stub, I'm not sure exactly why my edits need to be "fixed". As I've said, one message seems just about as good as the other in that regard. You could also consider that I spent hours working on my end, have had my work "undone" by you, and am quite prepared to see it as no big deal. I was not "undoing" your work, I was modifying it as I thought best. As we tell people when the edit window opens, "If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, do not submit it." I would suggest that you read Wikipedia:Ownership of articles. You don't own any of those articles, nor do you own the substub pages. Warning would have defeated the purposes of the test. I'm not going to repeat the test, so don't worry. The problem we have right now is that opinions seem to be polarized on whether the substub tag is a good idea or not. The Carpetbaggers (2)

Mike, I've been picking away at The Carpetbaggers and it's very different from what it was when you added the {{NPOV}} notice to it. The Carpetbaggers was, to put it bluntly, considered borderline-pornographic when it was published. If it offends you to have that stated, then you probably will not like the new article, either. This time, however, I am not asserting it as my own opinion, but quoting the words of the New York Times review that accompanied its publication. I believe that quoting reviews from a well-respected source is well within the bounds of NPOV. I also try to put The Carpetbaggers into context in terms of other books that were being published during those days of the sexual revolution. That section contains some frank language which may offend some but which I think is necessary and appropriate to the subject.

I'm sorry you object to my creating substubs for the remaining U.S. Senators from California, but with all due respect I'm going to continue to do it. If nothing else, these people will have the correct birth and death dates and an indentifier of why they are meaningful. The color is there for a reason

The color in template:Move to Wiktionary is there for a reason. It is in a non-threatening yellow (as apposed to pink in speedy delete or blue in vfd), but it still makes it clear that the page could be moved somewhere else. Please don't make massive changes like that without discussion, especially by using words like "unnecessary", that just makes discussion harder. This color is standardized on all "move to" templates, including Template:Move to Wiktionary, Template:Move to Wikibooks and Template:Move to Wikiquote. Shotokan katas

Hi Mike,
I don't know how to respond to you, but it seems that I simply edit your page. A bit strange, but I hope it works.
You said that it is difficult for you to figure yout what my pages are about. Perhaps I am on another planet? I think it is quite self-evident. I am cataloguing each of the 26 Shotokan katas. This is no small task - books have been written on the subject, but I hope to put in a bit of time every now and again and I hope that others will see my work (I have linked to relevant and already existing pages), and I have already outlined the skeleton of this project. So far, each kata has it's own page, with it's Japanese name translated, and a basic structure of what needs to be discussed in each. I have also created a 'See also' page for each, which refers back to the main page defining Kata and Bunkai and also to the Shotokan page, where all 26 Katas have been listed.
I hope this helps and am open to suggestions and assistance.whiskers

Yes, I have been doing quite a bit of work and research on quite a number of subjects and managing to tie them all together with a lot of appropriately positioned links, hence creating a vast net of already existing articles, but put into a new perspective by my stubs or short pieces. How big of an objection would you have to my removing your RFA? At present, you'd need 92 votes in support to pass, and it seems like the nomination is mostly becoming a lot of bitter and acrimonious sniping, which probably isn't helpful to anyone. Snowspinner 20:01, Sep 13, 2004 (UTC)

Although it seems I was one of your most outspoken critics, I do think I'd support you next time if you've created a couple articles and don't have any more conflicts like your early history seems to reflect. Could use some help with Dooley Wilson

There was a request for an article on Dooley Wilson, so I wrote one. He's the actor and singer who sang "As Time Goes By" in the Humphrey Bogart movie, Casablanca

I'm not very clear on article naming conventions. His name is most commonly given as Dooley Wilson, so that's where I put the article. He was born Arthur Wilson. I've seen his name listed as Arthur Dooley Wilson, Arthur (Dooley) Wilson, and Arthur "Dooley" Wilson. Which of these should be redirects? Do we need redirects for all of them?

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. I just want to say that it looks like you took a bit of a beating a while ago over Wikipedia:Substub, but I think that the caegory is the best page on Wikipedia for someone like me: I want to find an article that I can really do something to, and the subs are a great way to find them. substubs (again)

Hi Mike... hope you don't mind me saying this, but I feel pretty much the opposite to Humblefool. Nothing personal, and when substub was created I suspect it was one of the most useful things around. Now, however, I suspect it's had its time. The categorisation of stubs into subgroupings so that editors can find them has largely replaced the reason behind substub existing, in that editors can now find stub articles on their own specialist areas more easily, and, since there are few subcategories with more than a few hundred items, it should be easy for them to assess which articles need work most desperately. Also, categorising stubs and substubs into these subcategories has meant that over the last two months, Category:Substubs has gone from 3000 items to 36. At that level, don't see there's too much point in it any more. I hope you don't take it personally that I am likely to (again) suggest its deletion before too long. Grutness|^hello? Missing image
