Summerhill is a town located in Cayuga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,098.
The Town of Summerhill is the location of the birthplace of President Millard Fillmore. The town was founded in 1831 from the Town of Locke originally as the Town of Plato, but the name was changed to Summerhill in 1832 to avoid conflict with the name of another location. The town is in the southeast corner of the county.

Geography
The south town line is the border of Tompkins County, New York and the east town line is the border of Cortland County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 67.3 km² (26.0 mi²). 67.0 km² (25.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,098 people, 393 households, and 304 families residing in the town. The population density is 16.4/km² (42.4/mi²). There are 463 housing units at an average density of 6.9/km² (17.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.27% White, 0.18% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 393 households out of which 37.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% are non-families. 16.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the town the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $39,000, and the median income for a family is $39,500. Males have a median income of $26,336 versus $24,375 for females. Adjacent towns and areas
The Town of Sempronius is to the north and the Town of Locke is to the west. The Town of Groton in Tompkins County is on the south and the Town of Homer in Cortland County is on the east. Fillmore Glen State Park northwest of the town contains a replica of Millard Fillmore's birthplace.
