Homer is a town located in Cortland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,363. The name is from the Greek poet Homer.
The Town of Homer contains a village called Homer. The town is on the west border of the county.

History
This region was settled in 1791 by the Beede family. The region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution.
Geography
The west town line is the border of Cayuga County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 131.2 km² (50.7 mi²). 130.4 km² (50.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,363 people, 2,446 households, and 1,746 families residing in the town. The population density is 48.8/km² (126.3/mi²). There are 2,603 housing units at an average density of 20.0/km² (51.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.11% White, 0.41% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,446 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $41,321, and the median income for a family is $51,968. Males have a median income of $34,873 versus $23,656 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,145. 9.4% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line.
