Groton is a town located in Tompkins County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,794.
The Town of Groton contains a village, also called Groton. The town is in the northeast corner of the county.

Geography
The north town line is the border of Cayuga County, New York, and the east town line is the border of Cortland County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 128.4 km² (49.6 mi²). 128.3 km² (49.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,794 people, 2,168 households, and 1,543 families residing in the town. The population density is 45.1/km² (116.9/mi²). There are 2,287 housing units at an average density of 17.8/km² (46.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.38% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,168 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the town the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $42,407, and the median income for a family is $50,057. Males have a median income of $31,890 versus $23,642 for females.
