Cape May County is a county located in the state of New Jersey. As of 2000, the population is 102,326. Its county seat is Cape May Courthouse6.

This county is part of the Delaware Valley area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,607 km² (620 mi²). 661 km² (255 mi²) of it is land and 946 km² (365 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 58.86% water.

Most of the county is flat and coastal. Sea level is the lowest point; the highest elevation is found at three areas in Bellplain State Forest in the county's northern corner which are approximately 60 feet (18.2 m) above sea level.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 102,326 people, 42,148 households, and 27,354 families residing in the county. The population density is 155/km² (401/mi²). There are 91,047 housing units at an average density of 138/km² (357/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.57% White, 5.06% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.35% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 3.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 42,148 households out of which 26.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.50% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.10% are non-families. 30.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 20.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $41,591, and the median income for a family is $51,402. Males have a median income of $39,340 versus $27,621 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,172. 8.60% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.70% of those under the age of 18 and 7.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
