Stone Harbor is a borough located in Cape May County, New Jersey. It shares the barrier island, Seven Mile Island with its northern neighbor Avalon. Development began in the late 19th century as a beach resort along a railroad line which has since been replaced by a traffic island along the length of Second Avenue. Stone Harbor was incorporated in 1914 from Middle Township. It continues as a resort community with a summer population in excess of 20,000 enjoying well-patrolled beaches and a thriving commercial center. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a year-round population of 1,128.

Known as a wealthy and exclusive enclave, Stone Harbor sports a trendy, upscale central business district centered along 96th Street and 2nd Avenue. Stone Harbor attractions include the nearby Cape May County Park & Zoo, The Wetlands Institute, a 21-acre bird sanctuary, and the Stone Harbor Museum. The Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary also maintain the Villa Maria by the Sea convent here.

Geography

Stone Harbor is located at 39°3'3" North, 74°45'39" West (39.050716, -74.760950)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²). 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 28.64% water.

Stone Harbor borders Avalon Borough, North Wildwood City, Middle Township, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,128 people, 596 households, and 330 families residing in the borough. The population density is 306.7/km² (796.1/mi²). There are 3,428 housing units at an average density of 932.1/km² (2,419.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.76% White, 0.80% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 0.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 596 households out of which 11.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 5.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.5% are non-families. 40.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.89 and the average family size is 2.50.

In the borough the population is spread out with 12.3% under the age of 18, 3.0% from 18 to 24, 14.4% from 25 to 44, 31.6% from 45 to 64, and 38.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 58 years. For every 100 females there are 84.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.1 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $51,471, and the median income for a family is $67,250. Males have a median income of $52,500 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $46,427. 3.5% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
