Upper Township is a large township located in Cape May County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 12,115. The township contains many different villages and towns that create a diverse area reaching from the Great Egg Harbor Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. Seaville is the largest village and Strathmere is the Township's island containg a beautiful beach community.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 177.4 km² (68.5 mi²). 163.6 km² (63.2 mi²) of it is land and 13.8 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.77% water.
Upper Township borders Cumberland County, Atlantic County, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Woodbine Borough, Dennis Township, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,115 people, 4,266 households, and 3,365 families residing in the township. The population density is 74.1/km² (191.8/mi²). There are 5,472 housing units at an average density of 33.5/km² (86.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.59% White, 0.69% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,266 households out of which 39.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.7% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.1% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.23.
In the township the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $60,942, and the median income for a family is $68,824. Males have a median income of $46,528 versus $31,325 for females. The per capita income for the township is $27,498. 3.5% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
