Sierra County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 13,270. Its county seat is Truth or Consequences6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,972 km² (4,236 mi²). 10,827 km² (4,180 mi²) of it is land and 145 km² (56 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.32% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,270 people, 6,113 households, and 3,618 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 8,727 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.97% White, 0.48% Black or African American, 1.48% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 8.27% from other races, and 2.54% from two or more races. 26.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,113 households out of which 20.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.50% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.80% are non-families. 35.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.75.
In the county the population is spread out with 20.10% under the age of 18, 5.40% from 18 to 24, 19.50% from 25 to 44, 27.40% from 45 to 64, and 27.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 100.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $24,152, and the median income for a family is $29,787. Males have a median income of $24,570 versus $19,839 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,023. 20.90% of the population and 13.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.50% of those under the age of 18 and 14.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
