Hobbs is a city in Lea County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 28,657.
Geography
Hobbs is located at 32°42'44" North, 103°8'26" West (32.712240, -103.140681)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.0 km² (18.9 mi²). 49.0 km² (18.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 28,657 people, 10,040 households, and 7,369 families residing in the city. The population density is 584.5/km² (1,514.0/mi²). There are 11,968 housing units at an average density of 244.1/km² (632.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 63.52% White, 6.79% African American, 1.07% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 24.42% from other races, and 3.73% from two or more races. 42.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,040 households out of which 39.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 14.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.22.
In the city the population is spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $28,100, and the median income for a family is $33,017. Males have a median income of $31,352 versus $20,841 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,209. 24.2% of the population and 20.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.3% of those under the age of 18 and 15.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
