Farmington (Navajo Tótaʼ) is a city located in San Juan County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 37,844.

Primary industries are natural gas, coal, and oil.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 69.9 km² (27.0 mi²). 68.8 km² (26.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. Located at the junction of the Animas, San Juan, and La Plata rivers. The total area is 1.56% water. Approximate population is 37,000 for the city and 115,000 for San Juan County.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 37,844 people, 13,982 households, and 10,095 families residing in the city. The population density is 549.9/km² (1,424.5/mi²). There are 15,077 housing units at an average density of 219.1/km² (567.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.74% White, 0.84% African American, 16.96% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 7.77% from other races, and 3.10% from two or more races. 17.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,982 households out of which 37.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 22.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,663, and the median income for a family is $42,605. Males have a median income of $37,068 versus $22,717 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,167. 16.0% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
