San Miguel County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 30,126. Its county seat is Las Vegas6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 12,265 km² (4,736 mi²). 12,217 km² (4,717 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 30,126 people, 11,134 households, and 7,537 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 14,254 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 56.22% White, 0.78% Black or African American, 1.82% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 36.21% from other races, and 4.33% from two or more races. 77.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,134 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.50% are married couples living together, 16.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.10.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 10.90% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $26,524, and the median income for a family is $31,250. Males have a median income of $27,307 versus $22,588 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,268. 24.40% of the population and 19.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.80% of those under the age of 18 and 25.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
