History
During the Middle Ages, adjacent to the city was a big abbey. The abbey, founded in 1137, was plundered in 1578 during the reformation and closed by the French in 1796 after annexing Flanders to France.
In 1658, Ninove was occupied by the French army. After the Peace of the Pyrennees, the French returned the area back to Spain.
Since the 1970s, the town of Meerbeke is the finish of the cycling race Tour of Flanders.
