Brakel is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Brakel proper, Elst, Everbeek, Michelbeke, Nederbrakel, Opbrakel, Parike and Zegelsem. On January 1st, 2004 Brakel had a total population of 13,618 (6,626 males and 6,992 females). The total area is 56.46 km² which gives a population density of 241.18 inhabitants per km².
Brakel chickens are named after the region.
