Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,489 km² (575 mi²). 1,483 km² (573 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 35,226 people, 13,436 households, and 8,894 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (62/mi²). There are 14,432 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.35% White, 0.94% Black or African American, 1.19% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.06% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 8.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
