Lexington is a city located in Dawson County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,011. It is the county seat of Dawson CountyTemplate:GR. Lexington is located in southern Nebraska, on the Platte River, southeast of North Platte. It sits along the route of U.S. Highway 30 and the Union Pacific Railroad. In the 1860s it was the location of a stop along the Pony Express.
The town is noted for its relatively high proportion of Mexican-Americans for central Nebraska (over 50% over the town population), reflected in the Spanish language businesses in downtown and along U.S. Highway 30. The Lakota nation also maintains offices in downtown Lexington.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.34% is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,011 people, 3,095 households, and 2,237 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,314.7/km² (3,401.7/mi²). There are 3,322 housing units at an average density of 436.3/km² (1,128.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 64.20% White, 0.44% African American, 1.17% Native American, 1.10% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 30.78% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. 51.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,095 households out of which 43.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.14 and the average family size is 3.65.
In the city the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 108.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $38,098, and the median income for a family is $43,571. Males have a median income of $25,207 versus $20,857 for females.
