Lewistown is a city in Fergus County, Montana, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,813. It is the county seat of Fergus CountyTemplate:GR. Lewistown is located in central Montana, southeast of Great Falls. First planned in 1882, it was the site of an 1880s gold rush.

Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,813 people, 2,594 households, and 1,507 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,181.3/km² (3,055.3/mi²). There are 2,868 housing units at an average density of 582.8/km² (1,507.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.53% White, 0.07% African American, 1.41% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,594 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.9% are non-families. 37.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.88.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
