Laurel is a city located in Yellowstone County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,255.

Both the interstate highway I-90 and a number of local railroads run through Laurel. It is most known for its industry and agriculture, but also has a historic shopping district.

Laurel is home to a Cenex oil refinery.

Geography

Laurel is located at 45°40'26" North, 108°46'15" West (45.673986, -108.770893)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²). 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,255 people, 2,529 households, and 1,739 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,284.6/km² (3,318.5/mi²). There are 2,647 housing units at an average density of 543.6/km² (1,404.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.55% White, 0.16% African American, 1.17% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 2.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,529 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 27.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,679, and the median income for a family is $40,068. Males have a median income of $33,370 versus $17,201 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,953. 10.8% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
