Intrepid class starship
|
In the Star Trek fictional universe, the Intrepid class is a starship class used by Starfleet and was possibly designed in the 2360s in response to the Borg threat to the Federation. The Intrepid class is a sleek variation of traditional Federation starship design with a spoon-shaped saucer section attached to the engineering section. The main bridge, lifeboats, auxillary navigational deflector, sensor platforms and dorsal phaser arrays are at the top of the saucer section. The ship's ventral phaser arrays, additional sensors, thrusters, running lights, an Aeroshuttle and additional lifeboats occupy the ventral saucer. At the bow of the engineering section is the main navigational deflector and two photon torpedo launchers. The shuttlebays, aft torpedo launchers, impulse engines occupy the stern near the warp nacelles. Intrepid class starships are one of the most advanced in the fleet, with a top cruising speed of warp 9.975, a subspace-friendly warp drive, incorporation of bioneural gel packs into the computer system and one of the first starships with the Mark One Emergency Medical Hologram system. One distinctive feature of this class is the capacity to land on a planet's surface with thrusters under blue alert conditions. In addition, the bridge of an Intrepid class starship is a self-contained module that can detach itself from the ship in an emergency and manuever with thrusters. Like most Federation starships, the Intrepid class also has a plasma-based power distribution system, a duranium hull, tricylic life support systems, and artificial gravity plating. An Intrepid class starship has 257 rooms.
In real life, the Intrepid class was designed by Star Trek: Voyager production designer Richard D. James and illustrator Rick Sternbach.

Known Intrepid class starships
- USS Intrepid (NCC-74600, ex-NX-74600)
- Named for the USS Intrepid, the starship Intrepid was the pathfinder of its class. Circa stardate 47310.2 in 2370, Commander Donald Kaplan was the chief engineer on the Intrepid and engaged in power conversion efficiency contests with Commander Geordi La Forge on the USS Enterprise. The Intrepid was part of Battle Group Omega sent to intercept the Reman warship Scimitar circa stardate 56844.9 in 2379.
- USS Voyager (NCC-74656)
- Commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway, the starship Voyager was launched on stardate 48038.5 and briefly docked at Deep Space Nine circa stardate 48307.5 in 2371. The starship Voyager was transported to the Delta Quadrant by an alien entity known as the Caretaker while on a mission to apprehend a missing Maquis ship circa stardate 48315.6. Starfleet Command believed Voyager was destroyed until the Voyager EMH appeared on the USS Prometheus in 2374. In the Delta Quadrant, the starship Voyager made first contact with many alien species such as the Kazon, Hirogen and Species 8472. The starship Voyager returned to Earth circa stardate 54973.4 with the aid of Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway from 2404 and access to a Borg transwarp conduit. Fate uncertain.
- USS Bellerophon (NCC-74705)
- Named for the character of Bellerophon from Greek mythology, the starship Bellerophon transported Admiral William Ross, Dr. Julian Bashir and Section 31 deputy director Luther Sloan from Deep Space Nine to Romulus in 2375 during the Dominion War.
