Dr. Julian Bashir (played by Alexander Siddig) is a fictional character in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
A "genetically enhanced" human, Julian Bashir is Chief Medical Officer of Deep Space Nine and the USS Defiant.
As a child, Bashir, then known as "Jules", was mildly retarded; his parents illegally had him subjected to genetic engineering, with the goal of making him not only "normal", but "superior". The procedure worked, though an entirely new person, "Julian", was born. Widespread fear of genetic engineering throughout the Federation, combined with the procedure's illegality, led him to keep this a secret throughout most of his adult life.
During pre-Dominion war tensions, Bashir was kidnapped and sent to a Dominion prison camp along with General Martok and Garak's mentor and father, Enabran Tain. He was replaced with a shapeshifter during pre-Dominion war, who attempted to destroy the Bajoran sun, wiping out Federation, Klingon, and Romulan fleets without firing a shot. Bashir and Martok were able to escape thanks to help of Worf and Garak.
Bashir's status as an enhancile was accidentally revealed by his parents. As a consequence, he offered to resign his commission as an officer, however, Benjamin Sisko refused to accept this resignation. Since then, Bashir has been treated somewhat differently, but not much. Section 31 had become interested in him and tried to recruit him but failed. Starfleet asked Bashir to help integrate several individuals, who, like himself, had been illegally genetically enhanced, into Federation culture.
At the end of the series, Bashir is one of the officers remaining on Deep Space Nine, where he is free to pursue a newfound "friendship" (or romance) with Ezri Dax.
Bashir does make an appearance in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode of Birthright (#616).
