Fayette County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 148,644.
Fayette County was created on September 26, 1783 from part of Westmoreland County and named for the Marquis de Lafayette. Its county seat is Uniontown6.
A handful of well-known figures have acted in the area. When the ownership of the area was still undecided, twenty-two-years old George Washington fought his first battle against the French at Jumonville Glen in 1754. Albert Gallatin built his home at Friendship Hill. Secretary of State George C. Marshall of the Marshall Plan was born in the county seat. Prolific architect Frank Lloyd Wright constructed his crowning jewel in the mountains at Ohiopyle - Fallingwater.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,067 km² (798 mi²). 2,046 km² (790 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 148,644 people, 59,969 households, and 41,198 families residing in the county. The population density is 73/km² (188/mi²). There are 66,490 housing units at an average density of 32/km² (84/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.30% White, 3.51% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 59,969 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 12.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.30% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the county, the population is spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.60 males.

Fixtures
- Fort Necessity is a reconstructed historic edifice that was originally built by George Washington.
- Braddock's Grave is close by on the other side of the road.
- The Cumberland Road bisects Fayette County. It was the first long roadway to be paid for by the Federal Government. It was a toll road once called The National Pike, but it is now Route 40. Searights toll house still exists.
- The Mason-Dixon Line borders Fayette County.
- Fallingwater is architect Frank Lloyd Wright's design.
- Friendship Hill is a national historic site.
