Lightship Category

Hi! I wasn't aware of the lightship list, but categories are evolving into more of a supplement to lists rather than a replacement anyway; advantages are that the category remains even if the list is mangled, plus the category reflects actual article titles instead of redir/piping. I also hope that their existence will encourage lists to be made more useful by annotation (a la list of people by name), and at some point I hope we'll be able to use tools to compare list and category content. mistake deletion

BTW, when you catch a mistake and want to delete the page, ask for "speedy deletion" by adding "delete" template (with the double braces). VfD is only for the potentially controversial. Stan 04:10, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

USS Virginia

Yup, that's a better picture. I had thought of the other as more-or-less a placeholder; the best that Google found me, and better than the blank space there before. I've made the change, but the caption needs something: when? where?

Categorization

As I understand it, putting Barry into "U.S. ships" is redundant, since Category:US_Navy_destroyers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:U.S._Navy_destroyers) is a subset of Category:US_ships (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:US_ships).

In the "vertical" dimension, you should probably be more frugal. A good general rule is that articles should be placed in the most specific categories they reasonably fit in. For example, Queen Elizabeth should not be listed directly under People, but Queens of England might be a good place for her. We know that all Queens of England qualify as Famous Britons and as Royalty, and all of those folks qualify as People. But sometimes there's a good reason to

"Are you suggesting that it is a negative thing to list in more than one category?" Well, it could get cluttered. Imagine if all the supercategories of 'USN destroyers' were added to the top of the page. Or if all US ships were categorized as 'US ships'--there'd be a long page! So you've got to draw line somewhere.
As it is, if someone is on the 'US ships' page, they can drill down to the 'US destroyers' page in two clicks. And there's room for more "horizontal" categories; for instance, Washington, DC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Washington%2C_DC).

Database query

Sorry. Only sysops can run database queries. Neutrality (talk) 23:02, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I'm assuming this is in reply to a message similar to what you posted on my Talk page. Yes, only administrators can run queries through Special:Asksql. However, you can do it yourself by downloading (http://download.wikimedia.org) the database dump and running a query on your own machine. See Wikipedia:Database queries#Queries to find new users for instructions. Alternately, you can request that someone run a query for you at Wikipedia:SQL query requests. --Slowking Man 23:08, Sep 9, 2004 (UTC)

Welcoming newbies

This page (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&hideminor=0&target=newbies&limit=50&offset=0) was created by Tim Starling during an incident back in june where we has a disgruntled ex user run a vandalbot. The bot created a new user then vandalised with that user, then another new user and so on. Ayway the page shows the edits of the last 50 edits by newbies, and so is a great way of finding new users to welcome. HTH. Theresa Knott (Nate the Stork) 15:31, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

West Virginia University

I think it looks awesome how much info's been added to WVU; seems like a school I'd want to go to some day, hm? You'd asked about the red links: I know it doesn't look so great, but the way I look at it, if you're going to provide a list of notable alumni at all, you might as well link them. They'll get filled in eventually. Rhymeless | (Methyl Remiss) 10:15, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

FYI: I'm not related to the WVU professor, as far as I know. I did live in the Charleston area for about a dozen years before I left for law school (not in West Virginia), but I never attended WVU. Dale Arnett 05:08, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

SS John W. Brown

I see that you modified this page to read "located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor." from "located in Baltimore Harbor." The problem is that the Brown is not in the Inner Harbor. It is at Pier One of the Dundalk Marine Terminal in Baltimore Harbor. Oldfarm 19:12, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

U S Maritime Commission

I had added United States Maritime Commission. I did not know about US Maritime Administration page. The logo I added was the original 1936 version. I was also trying to figure where to list the ships built under the 1936 charter. See: Merchant Ships at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships Oldfarm 02:25, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit&section=new)| talk)

Naval Air Station

Out of curiosity, do you know anything about naval air stations, or specific naval air stations? Most of the aircraft carrier pages reference at least one such station, but no one seems to be able to create pages for the bases in question. TomStar81

Dear Scotty, would it be possible for you to make another Image:Five Good Emperors.jpg not distorted. This one is a bit sinistre. muriel@pt 23:38, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Commonwealth of Nations Map

Hello, Scotty! Nice map of the Commonwealth of Nations. But I wonder what happened to Canada on this map? It looks divided in half ... --romanm (talk) 19:44, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

IMHO it would be better to leave off the details about lakes of Canada on this map. As it is, it's not quite obvious that there are lakes from NW to SE; it looks like a borderline if you don't look very carefuly. --romanm (talk) 00:35, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

X-1 Submarine

I've replaced Image:X-1.bmp with Image:X-1.png; it's identical quality but about a quarter of the size. Not sure what you want to do with the original, but thought I'd let you know anyway. Shimgray 20:54, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
