The Image you have deleted
Dear mr. Lupo:
The image you deleted was MY work. You have deleted a picture of which the copyright belongs to ME. I intend to re-upload the picture. In the future, please add questionable images to the "Canidates for speedy deletion" instead of just deleting them for this very purpose. Please reply ASAP so we can resolve the matter.
--NightDragon 07:23, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Stand By. I am reading that link you sent me.
--NightDragon 07:25, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Then you have to release it under the GFDL. If you upload it again under that restrictive license, I will delete it again. Also read what the {{copyrighted}} tag says. Lupo 07:26, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
aah. What securities (As an artist) would i be guarenteed under the GFDL from people just copying my work and selling it as their own? (which is the very reason copyright exists) --NightDragon 07:30, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Well, I seriously doubt you could sell that drawing to anyone. But the GFDL in short:
- Requires proper attribution of all authors.
- Requires that with any redistribution, a copy of the text of the GFDL be included.
- Allows anyone to re-use and re-distribute the work (or even a changed version of the work, a so-called derivative work) anywhere for any purpose, including commercial purposes, provided the above two points are satisfied.
- So, if someone redistributes the image and claims it was his own, he violates the terms of the GFDL. If someone changes the image and claims that changed version was his own, he violates the terms of the GFDL. If someone redistributes the image (or a changed version thereof) without also distributing the full text of the GFDL, he violates the terms of the GFDL. If someone distributes a changed version of the image and claims it's his own, based on an original done by you, and also distributes the text of the GFDL, he's in the clear. Я вынужден с Вами согласиться . Но Вы забываете , что читателями Wiki будут люди , а люди меняются и много людей увлечены , а Вы хотите делать не для многих ?
- Dear Lupo! I am compelled to agree with you. But you forget, what readers Wiki will be people, and people vary and many people are keen, and you wish to do not for many?

uwe
hallo lupo - my wikimail send does not work, the right emails are in there, but tried to send one to my self, did not work. I lived my whole life with open email, did get very little spam. Please use my email on the user page or the rutgers server http://marine.rutgers.edu/faculty_ukils.html - take care Uwe Kils 19:52, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)
- I'll get back to you, Uwe. But please be patient, I won't have much time for online things in the next few days. Lupo 06:42, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- right, we do not have the copyright for the hempel image - can you please erase the picture , I uploaded a new one gotthilfhempel2.jpg Uwe Kils 01:57, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll put it on WP:CP. Lupo 06:42, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- In fact, since the old one was now a duplicate, I've deleted it right away. I have also changed Image:Gotthilfhempel2.jpg slightly. (Sharpened, and removed that distracting structure in the background.) Maybe you'd like to use that improved version on de:, too? Lupo 07:08, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, could you tell us when this image was taken? A caption like "Gotthilf Hempel in 1995" or some such conveys more information than just "Gotthilf Hempel"... Lupo 07:10, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Did the same post-processing for Image:Uwekils3.jpg, too. Lupo 07:22, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll put it on WP:CP. Lupo 06:42, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
footnote 3/"ref" template
Left a message at Template_talk:Ref#blue_arrow_pictures_like_for_external_links.3F, the problem appears to be back (maybe you already noticed). Thanks if you could spare some time to shed your light on the issue (again)! --Francis Schonken 13:43, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Nope, I didn't notice, and apparently people have already hashed out at Template talk:Ref that it's got nothing to do with my changes. Lupo 19:00, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Did you know?
Missing image Updated_DYK_query.png Updated DYK query | Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Valerius Anshelm, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page. |
(1) The user page updates succeeded before the update of DYK itself, due to Wikipedia server problems. (2) The article claims Valerius Anshelm wrote a world history. Is the article wrong? I updated DYK just in case. Gdr 20:40, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)

I noticed that you have taken care of Image:65war paatkhemkaran.jpg. I meant to do it along with a whole bunch of images uploaded by the same user (and at least some from the very same source), but didn't get around to it. If you are interested, you will find the complete list on my scratchpad. Rl 11:39, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I already checked his contribs and saw that there were more of that. However, I don't have the time to do them now. If nobody has done them by then, I'll get back to it sometime next week. Lupo 11:41, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Glass ceramic stoves and enumeration?
I'm sorry I wasn't able to answer your question about the stove. I guess my analogy was sort of vague. Maybe if I come across some nice pictures I can post them on that page, and consequently improve that glass-ceramic article. --HappyCamper 14:35, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, but even if you didn't answer it completely, you gave me a new idea to try out. Thanks anyway! And if you can improve the article, all the better! That's what we're here for, isn't it? Lupo 06:29, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Antarctic krill
hallo Dr. Lupo!
- thank you for your fine and extensive comments, you put a lot of work into it, and thank you for your edits on krill - we will keep on working on it - salps live only one year - my English is rotten, I am from Germany (as you know) but I try to contribute most on the English articles so many in the world can utilize it - one of my students or children will later extend the German and Danish and Norwegian translations - did you ever send me an email? I tried it and it did not work, even though I have the prefs set ok. Have you ever considered working with us in Wikipedia under your full name? We are working of getting an editorial gremium together for activites on sci articles, so they are in the future becoming a quite relyable resource for interactive teaching, even at academic levels - i would appreciate if you would send me your thoughts, or disuss the topic on the Wikiversity pages - take care
- Yes, I did send you an e-mail to the address you gave me – directly, not through Wikipedia. And as I have already explained (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Lupo&oldid=14357096#uwe_kils), I am quite comfortable with not linking my Wikipedia-identity of "Lupo" with my real-life identity. Lupo 15:41, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- too bad, I did not get it or missed your email - please appologize that I did not answer. I would appreciate if you would send it again http://marine.rutgers.edu/faculty_ukils.html and put "uwe" or "wikipedia" in the subject field - ok, ok, was just a friendly try - maybe Wikipedia in its current form is not the media we hoped it would become fast to carry more (peer-reviewed) sci and edu content to the third world and people with low budgets. We really do not need it for our purposes, we have many web servers running, since the birth of the web. And it is not "self advertisement" - as you call it, when you erased my name under many images - it just made communication and finding easyer, and it was style in the hatching days of wikis that image authors would be credited. Today it is not much fun for many to donate cutting edge images to Wikipedia. I try since years to lure my colleagues into it - with little sucess. We got a price and much donations for our efforts to communicate sci to the masses and third world free, so I still feel obliged to keep on working for the good cause (we had the first NeXT in Kiel, the krill image exactly of this article was the first image of a critter on the web ever, and it hovers through cyberspace since without a break, it was accessed on my ecoscope.com server many million times, the founder of fishbase.org was a student, serving now 11 million a month, the fouder of obis.org was a student, compiling over 5 million critter pages, and I served as sysop in many projects, believe it or not), and after my retirement I will keep up as webphanatic, with Meelar or not, with sysop access or not, featured or not - take care Uwe Kils 16:55, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

krill
thank you, Lupo, for your extensive work. I changed most of your extra points. We have the environmental concerns a lot, thats why I wrote "no knowledge" - I would like to add more critics, but then it would be POV - the intelligent reader will do that on her own we trust - best greetings Uwe Kils 13:09, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)
- I liked your critical comment about carbon sequestration a lot - it would be nice if you would add a critical component (my personal oppinion is: first do much, much science, and if found by teh politicians to be necessary then maybe do it slow, good superwised - what they do now is with rudimentary science but big money, some will earn millions, there is no person sereously working on large zooplankton and krill - but in Europa we are trained to stay neutral as scientist, just show facts and let the people vote - but you could add oppinion to it) - we wanted the article multi peer reviewed - if most of the current editors don't like it - ok - it is the best reviewed and resourced article on krill of all encyclopedia anywhere anyhow.
- Somebody in wikipedia at least liked my stuff Wikipedia:Picture of the day/June 20, 2005 - have a nice day and thank you again for your interactive collaboration

- I like your work, too. In fact, I think it's terrific that a real expert bothers so much. And it is really interesting. Sorry if you got a different impression; maybe I should have phrased my comments more carefully. That's the way a review can go—I remember well how it was when I tried to put articles through WP:FAC... it is a good article. Could you clear up the two remaining items, please, then you'll have me off your back :-)
- If it doesn't get promoted to "featured" status, keep two things in mind: First, that doesn't mean that people don't like it. But some people can be infinitely picky (sometimes, I am, too :-), and not all people have followed this through. This article has improved incredibly in a very short time. And that gives way to my second point: it may be quite all right to re-nominate the article after a few weekls if it doesn't make it this time. But give it time! Lupo 15:35, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I changed the three points, I just do not know what more to write about the eye, nothing is known, I just thought it would be nice to share the beauty of the structure with others, just click on the eye three times Uwe Kils 15:42, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)
- I left a few suggestions at Talk:Antarctic krill. But I still don't understand the yolk thing. Sorry 'bout that, but I'm not a marine biologist, just a bloody layman. To me, yolk is a component of the egg. Does it have some other meaning for you? How can it be inside the body of the larva? Lupo 15:50, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- it is in the egg, but after hatching in the body - don't you think this is too banal if I start to explain it in the article? I feel the extension is a little embarrasing already. I can do that of course, if you want. I try just to make the information conform to the majority oppinion within wikipedia (special papers (boring) I produced enough in my life) - eye: to my knowledge no point is known. I could give the size, but that depends of the size of the animal. People can see the size when they go to the linked high res images - do you have http://www.skype.com ? would make things so much easyer Uwe Kils 16:02, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

- Nope, I don't have VoIP. Remember, I'm on a sloooow link (and working with outdated hardware, too—my computer is about eight years old). Yes, I still think the article should explain why that yolk is in the body of the nauplii. Maybe an in-depth explanation is best done in the Nauplius article, though. I've left some more comments and questions at Talk:Antarctic krill. We should not forget that Wikipedia's target audience is not oceanography students alone, but also laypeople from around the world. Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia, texts should be understandable for any reasonably intelligent and reasonably educated person. (Let's not discuss what "reasonably educated" is, though... :-) Lupo 08:55, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
thank you everybody
I would like to express my thanks to everybody helping in the nomination of Antarctic krill. I think 3 1/2 supports and a long long discussion are an unexpected and great outcome for a critter so remote and unknown - you should see how little and poor Antarctic krill is represented in Encarta and Britannica - this is the best reviewed and resourced general article of krill we know of - it is impossible to fullfill all wishes at the same time - this is what we did with our all product peer review stamp (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Antarctic_krill&oldid=15197713) to qualify this stage of the article for academic exercises, especially for our dreams of a Virtual university within Wikiversity - good luck to you all Uwe Kils 21:48, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

help with images
hallo Lupo, can you help me reset the size on the plankton page - I replaced the images with high res versions Uwe Kils 15:13, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
- ah, El did it for me - you worked very nice on the refs and weblinks Uwe Kils 17:25, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
- fairuse: I planned to upload a different version of the image - whats wrong with fair use?
- I guess you're referring to Image:Krill.jpg. What happened there is the following: you uploaded the low-res version and released it into the GFDL. Then someone else came along, uploaded the hi-res version and tagged it "fair use" in addition to the GFDL tag from the low-res version. He shouldn't have done that. The GFDL is a free license, world-wide; whereas "fair use" is a blurry concept that applies really only in the U.S. It does not apply in other jurisdictions, e.g. in Germany. In fact, that's one of the reasons why the German Wikipedia does not allow "fair use" images: the (mostly German) editors want to be able to re-use the content in Germany without getting into legal problems. Whoever uploaded the hi-res version couldn't tag it as GFDL: you had not released that version as such. Now, if you, as the photographer and copyright holder, decide to replace the low-res version with a hi-res one, you release it under the terms of the GFDL and that's fine. (In this particular case, you could just tell me, and I'll revert back to the hi-res version without having to re-upload those 900kB.) But we don't replace images under free licenses by other, even better, images under non-free licenses. And "fair use" in particular is misused too often on Wikipedia; some people seem to think it means they can rip off any odd image they find. Lupo 07:04, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Ich hab Deine email bekommen, vielen Dank. Changed it back to gfdl Uwe Kils 13:36, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

response from Japan?
I wanted to share this with you:
Hello Kils
Just would like to state that i have very much enjoyed being involved in a project of this nature. To see the speed of co-operation between various people was (Uwe, Lupo and Salleman and all others) fantastic. It was a complete buzz to go off researching about a scientific subject and coming to some understanding and appreciation of a creature that i would have no knowledge or interest in otherwise. I would like to say that it takes a damn good teacher to get others interested in what they teach and i for one, if only in a rudimentary and general way have found the subject of Krill and sorrounding issues of ecology and environment fascinating. I think that says a lot about your willingness to let others participate in something which you obviously have great knowledge in and could easily have been a lot less humble with. At some point i will put up some informtion on my home page so at least people know a little more about me. Am going to try to extend the article on Ice-algae so any info you may have would be good. I hope the article on Antartic Krill gets featured as i think it is now very good.
Wikiversity sounds like a good idea but will need more time to go through the proposal (not too sure what help i could be).
Once again thanks Uwe! Yakuzai 22:50, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
