User talk:Imran

Hello there, welcome to the 'pedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you need any questions answered about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or drop me a line. BTW, great work on the Public domain image resources page (double great if you are also IP 213.253.39.xx)! This resource will be most useful -- especially after this Sunday when the new software goes online (the new wikiware will give each image its own editable wiki page). Cheers! --maveric149, Friday, July 19, 2002

Welcome to Wikipedia! And thanks for fixing up the go pages. I'm a big fan of the game, so I'd love to see more written about it, especially tactics and strategy (with board diagrams)!! --Ed Poor

Various notes on things not yet large enough to have there own articles,

James Pierce- Surgeon to the Duke of York, and he was also Surgeon-General of the Fleet. Friend of Samuel Pepys

"Polexandre,” by Louis Le Roy de Gomberville, was first published in 1632. “The History of Polexander” was “done into English by W. Browne,” and published in folio, London, 1647. It was the earliest of the French heroic romances

 1. “The Blacksmith” was the same tune as “Green Sleeves.” The earliest known copy of “The Praise of the Blacksmith” is in “An Antidote against Melancholy,” 1661. See “Roxburghe Ballads,” ed. W. Chappell, 1872, vol. ii. p. 126. (Ballad Society:)

Wohler/Woehler

Hi, I saw your addition of Friedrich Wohler (Wöhler). We already had an article under Friedrich Woehler, so I pasted your text there. If you prefer it under "Wohler", I can move everything there.

BTW: Nice source you found there! We should check for articles on each of these people. --Magnus Manske

I just grabbed that one from an obituary in the 1882 edition of Scientific American. I normally keep my eye on http://www.pgdp.net/c/list_etexts.php?x=g&sort=5 for any etexts that have parts that can be extracted for wikipedia. --Imran 22:00, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Can I invite you to participate on Talk:Science fiction

I am sure you thought you had grounds for the reversion of the changes made to the Science fiction article. The problem for me is that the one offered on the edit summary is merely a bald assertion. So why not expand on that in the talk page of the article, so we get the full skinny. I personally would be particularly interested why you thought that a simple reversion was best, rather than just correcting the particular bits of the added information which were erroneous. Or do you not (frex) acknowledge at all that the term scientifiction has been used? But I repeat again, I would like it very much if you clarified these things on the talk page of the article in question... -- Cimon Avaro on a pogo-stick 00:43, Sep 19, 2003 (UTC)

Please rethink your vote at Adolf Hitler -- noting what is actually being voted on. All we want to do is include a note that Adolph is a more archaic spelling; we do not actually wish to replace "adolf" with "adolph". Lirath Q. Pynnor

Please DO NOT revert the change I made to Hacking without a bit more thought! My entry is far more complete than yours - there are many more meanings than in connection to the computing usage, and some strict NPOV is required. Changing the entry less than two minutes after I put in my version is extremely bad manners - it doesn't give anyone else a chance to see what they feel about that version. GRAHAMUK 23:14, 3 Dec 2003 (UTC)

In ref to the hacking page, none of the other entries are encyclopedic, see Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a dictionary. --Imran
Fair comment. The response in that case it to make note of that on the article's talk page and set up a dialogue to resolve the problem. Simply overwriting with an inferior and more limited version of your own device doesn't do that, and pisses people off no end. There are points in your version that can be incorporated, but I'd like to see the origin of the term (blade) and other meanings (horses, slang) incorporated as well. There is more to life than computers. GRAHAMUK 23:24, 3 Dec 2003 (UTC)
They'd be inappropriate in a single article, if the other defintions other than the computer one had encyclopedic articles written about them then a disambiguation page should be created. --Imran 23:32, 3 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hi there. (I am hypothesizing that we are from the same academic institution since you are the one who made that crucial correction on Danny Lewin's Wikipedia page.) This is in reference to the Settlers of Catan images which were discussed at Talk:Settlers of Catan/copyright and fair use. You have written on the Wikipedia:Possible copyright infringements page, that a quick reading of my summary indicates a lack of understanding of copyright law. I believe that supposed misunderstanding had been addressed as follows, on the Talk page that you didn't read. Please be nice enough to do due diligence, and take the time to read the rest of the the summary; I cared enough to research and compile these legal precedents, spending much longer than it would take for a voter to read through the page just once in full. If you are just too busy, then at least read the fair use section. Last of all, if you are adamant in your distrust of my understanding of copyright and fair use, you can read the Talk page where the issue was settled in my favor after a period of broader participation. Only after that debate ended were the two votes to delete initiated (one for the images, one for offshoots of the main page), by the same people who lost the copyright debate... so it seems there are no protections against double jeopardy in Wikipedia. Again, we have spent days examining the law as applicable to this particular situation. Please do not disregard the previous discussion lightly. ~ stardust 14:53, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I'm afraid you're misunderstanding what the US Copyright Office website states. You have to understand that under US Law copyright registration and copyright are two different things. You need to send the LOC a copy in order to get copyright registration but you don't need to in order to get copyright. --Imran 15:31, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
At the end of the copyright discussion, I revert to assuming that the images are all copyrighted material, and examine legal, fair use of copyrighted material. Please see below and give your assessment. The legitimacy of my image use carried in the Talk discussion based on the fair use clause. ~ stardust 08:03, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Begin excerpt: ... Want ignore all the evidence above? Fine. But the fair use provision of US copyright laws allows for the reproduction of parts of copyrighted Settlers of Catan materials without the permission of Mayfair Games and Klaus Teuber, the copyright owners. If you're not convinced that the article falls under fair use, see the next section.

What constitutes fair use?

Well start by reading the detailed explanation of fair use provided by UMaine Farmington (http://departments.umf.maine.edu/~library/plagiarism/copyright/fair_use.html).

Then use the UMN Duluth Fair Use Worksheet (http://www.d.umn.edu/lib/copyright/worksheet.html) to apply the four factors determining the bounds of fair use. All of the following factors indicate fair use:

 • The purpose of Wikipedia as a whole is not to generate profit or revenue.
 • The purpose of the document is educational and commentary in nature.
 • The nature of the document is fact-based (i.e. the mechanics of the game).
 • The amount of included artwork is not such that the documentation could not stand without it.
 • The amount of included artwork is not such that it could be used to replace sale of the game, particularly its 3-dimensional components.
 • The text of the document is neither derived nor based on the Settlers Almanac.
 • No negative effect on the market for the game is intended or likely.
 • I personally own a lawfully acquired (purchased) copy of the game.

Another outline of fair use, in the specific context of third-party documentation of commercial games, may be found at GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/help/hcontrib_2c.html), and at Far Future Enterprises Fair Use FAQ (http://www.farfuture.net/n5598.html), where the most notable quote states the bounds of fair use as follows, "You cannot scan entire sections of art in an attempt to reproduce a book, but if you want to display a map on your web page to annotate an adventure you are writing, or you need to display a tank for an article that you have composed about it, then it's OK to use it."

Displaying a Standard (III-IV) Settlers map, or a boat next to its section in the article, are entirely analogous to the instances given above. While Mayfair Games (http://www.coolgames.com/) has not issued a similar fair use statement, remember that fair use is permitted with or without explicit permission from the copyright owner.

Lastly, although I am not legally bound to do so, I have contacted Mayfair Games regarding fair use of illustrative representations of their games on Wikipedia. When I receive their reply, I will post it.

Twin Peaks and Castle Rock

You might want to look at the following two cases,

 • Twin Peaks v. Publications International
 • Castle Rock Entertainment, Inc. v. Carol Publ. Group

They're both cases where a third-party factual work based on a fictional work were found not to constitute fair use. --Imran 12:56, 23 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Thanks. I'd read the first, just read the second. Both of those had problems in part because they weren't fact-based works. Twin Peaks featured a near-complete abridgement of almost every plot twist in that fictional TV series, all of which was original creative work originally. Castle Rock involved 634 fragments from fictional Seinfeld TV series episodes which made up almost all of the derived Seinfeld quiz book. Both are primarily about infringement of fictional works, not factual. On the factual side of things, you may find Assessment Technologies v. WIREdata [1] (http://www.ca7.uscourts.gov/op3.fwx?submit1=showop&caseno=03-2061.PDF) (mentioned in the Feist v. Rural article) of interest, for it very clearly covers the question of the copyright status of collections of public domain facts. Jamesday 19:30, 24 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Daniel M. Lewin

From my talk page: "I see you've put a VfD notice on Daniel M. Lewin but not listed it on the votes for deletion page, was this an accident, as I can't see any reason for the page to be deleted. --Imran 16:18, 20 Dec 2003 (UTC)"

You're quite right. I added Vfd notices to Daniel M. Lewin, Donald A. Peterson, and John J. Wenckus in the early hours of that morning, even though their articles were not properly listed on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. Sorry about that. The articles had been nominated on 16th December 2003 by Menchi, but since that user didn't list the articles on Vfd individually, or add the warning text to the tops of the pages concerned, I don't think the articles were properly listed. I was going to relist them after adding the notices, but didn't quite get round to it. The articles were deleted later that day. I see that Daniel M. Lewin was undeleted and rewritten shortly after that, and has now been kept, which is nice. Perhaps the same could happen to the others. I've therefore undeleted them and relisted them on Vfd properly. -- Oliver P. 06:04, 31 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Anne McCaffrey: Rescue Run

In your initial entry for Anne McCaffrey, you included the title

 • Rescue Run (1991)

I've looked in Contemporary Authors, Books in Print, and her own website, and this book is not in any of these sources. Where'd you invent this from? Hope you don't mind if I delete it. (I hate it when I accidently invent cool book titles. They're *so* hard to find in the library!!)

Here's the entry from the Locus SF index,
Rescue Run, Anne McCaffrey (Wildside Press, Dec ’91, $40.00, 126pp, hc); Reissue (Wildside Press 1991) sf novelette that originally appeared in Analog, illustrated by Pat Morrissey, signed by McCaffrey, and limited to 500 copies; second printing. --Imran 18:40, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Interesting. I bet she incorporated it into another book. It's not mentioned anywhere on her website.

Basic image background info

Can you include stuff like "location where I filmed" etc on your User:Imran/photos? Basic stuff like that is of interest to readers. ---Menchi 05:20, 16 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Imran, I updated Image:Igoware.JPG after retouching it to make it easier to see. I may have oversharpened it a bit, or the color may be more off than you care for. Let me know if you have any objections. PilotPrecise 03:52, 18 March 2004 (UTC)

Press coverage

 • Anti-Semitic 'Jew' site top of Google search (http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1080707285901), Jerusalem Post, about an attempt to make the article Jew get a higher google ranking than anti-semitic sites.

Wikiproject Cryptography

Hi! I noticed that you've done quite a bit of work on cryptography articles — I thought you might be interested in this hacked-together proposal for a Wikipedia:WikiProject Cryptography. It might be a reasonable place for collecting together useful information, identifying work that needs doing, and hosting more general discussions. Comments, suggestions would be most welcome. — Matt 20:30, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Imran, The spelling question has become formal. You might want to take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cryptography/Cipher_vs_Cypher. It will, I fear never settle down. ww 20:50, 25 May 2004 (UTC)

Do you have any reference for Richard Aertsz? That article is currently listed on VfD as "suspicious". By the way, are you male or female? anthony (see warning)

Wording issue in the election notice

The deadlines in the notice have been changed to indicate the period is two weeks, but the running text still says "The elections will start on Saturday, 30th May 2004 and last one week from that time ending Saturday, 12th June 2004". Just thought I'd point it out, since only you and Danny are supposed to edit the page. =] --Delirium 21:04, May 9, 2004 (UTC)

Tallying

I've set up a mock vote, with fake candidates. You should be able to tally the vote (only the person with the private key can). Download and install PHP if you don't already have it. You don't need Apache or MySQL. Get tally.php from CVS, e.g. using [2] (http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/wikipedia/phase3/extensions/BoardVote/tally.php). Download Special:Boardvote/dump and save it to a file on your local machine. Then run php with the following parameters:

php tally.php dump.txt

where php, tally.php and dump.txt will likely all need to be replaced with things from the correct directories. Once we've confirmed that this works, I guess we're ready to start voting. -- Tim Starling 09:12, 30 May 2004 (UTC)

Elections

Hello Imran,

thank you for overseeing elections to the Board of Trustees. However, announcing the winners without publishing the official results was a major procedural goof. Please see the Village pump and publish the full election results very soon now.

Lupo 07:43, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hi Imran, I want to thank you again for all the work you put into to organising the elections. As I wrote on my user page, I was really surprised at how smoothly it all went, and I've no doubt that the effort you and Danny put in played a large part in that. Do you have any more need for your temporary adminship on Meta? Please could you let me know, or apply for permanent adminship there so the temporary access can be removed? Thank you. Hello, you expressed an interest in developing this project a while back. You suggested you could code "if needed", along with Guaka and Eloquence. It seems, to me, to be the time to get this project of the ground and formulate a final roadplan - and start the coding for this project. Are you still interested? --Oldak Quill 19:32, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

WikiProject Cryptography mailshot

Hi, quick note to let you know about what's happening with the WikiReader in Cryptography. There's now a provisional Table of Contents to work with, and for the next 68 days or so there'll be an "Article of the Day" scheme: each day there'll be a particular article highlighted for reviewing and fixing. There's two templates for this purpose: Template:WikiReaderCryptographyAOTD and Template:WikiReaderCryptographyAOTD-Verbose. The smaller one looks like this:

WikiReader Cryptography — article of the day edit  (https://academickids.com:443/encyclopedia/index.php?title=Template:WikiReaderCryptographyAOTD-Verbose&action=edit)
MRR
Monday, 20 June HMAC (Talk) (History) (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=HMAC&action=history)

Tuesday, 21 June Data Encryption Standard (Talk) (History) (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Data_Encryption_Standard&action=history)

Wednesday, 22 June Classical cipher (Talk) (History) (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Classical_cipher&action=history)

Thursday, 23 June Linear cryptanalysis (Talk) (History) (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Linear_cryptanalysis&action=history)

Friday, 24 June Secure shell (Talk) (History) (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Secure_shell&action=history)

Notes: If you find problems that you can't fix (or it's too much effort), it would be very helpful if you could place a note on the Talk: page. Articles need to be checked for 1) Accuracy (Factchecking: Are there any mistakes? Is the writing precise? Are sources cited?), 2) Completeness (Any obvious omissions? Does it need illustration?) 3) Quality of writing (Copyedits: Grammar and spelling, phrasing, structure) 4) Neutrality (Is it written from the NPOV? Do we document all relevant points of view?) — Thanks!

The exciting world of image tagging

Greetings! A while age you signed up to help tag images, so I thought I'd let you know what's been going on lately in the image-tagging world.

First off, things are moving slow, but at least they're moving in the right direction. (What I mean is, more images are tagged every month than the number of newly uploaded images without tags, so the net number of untagged images keep decreasing.) But judging from the progress on the lists at User:Yann/Untagged Images, most of the time it's just me tagging images. And it sure gets lonely out on the tagging prairie.

Second, I have basically rewritten the User:Yann/Untagged Images page. Hopefully that will make it easier for people to help, and will attract new recruits. What do you think of the new text and layout?

And third, there have been a bunch of new tags added in the last month. Check out Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the new tags and new organization, mostly done by Zondor.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Happy holidays! Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 17:33, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit&section=new)| talk)

Unverified images

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following images:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the imagesand I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 23:26, Dec 9, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

New Mathematics Wikiportal

I noticed you've done some work on Mathematics articles. I wanted to point out to you the new Mathematics Wikiportal- more specifically, to the Mathematics Collaboration of the Week page. I'm looking for any math-related stubs or non-existant articles that you would like to see on Wikipedia. Additionally, I wondered if you'd be willing to help out on some of the Collaboration of the Week pages.

I encourage you to vote on the current Collaboration of the Week, because I'm very interested in which articles you think need to be written or added to, and because I understand that I cannot do the enormous amount of work required on some of the Math stubs alone. I'm asking for your help, and also your critiques on the way the portal is set up.

Please direct all comments to my user-talk page, the Math Wikiportal talk page, or the Math Collaboration of the Week talk page. Thanks a lot for your support! ral315 02:54, Feb 11, 2005 (UTC)

Your photo is presently captioned in piano as "the piano". It would be great if the caption could be made more specific. What piano is this? From what year? Who built it? Where is it? This isn't "the" piano, it's just "a" piano — but which one? Even if you don't know the answers to all of this, it would be great if you could add info on where and when you took it — this will help others to find out.
