Reduced images
Hello, you may have noticed that I've uploaded new versions of several of the images you scanned from The Clip Art Book. I was able to reduce the file size of most of them by around 20% by running them through a program called pngcrush (http://pmt.sourceforge.net/pngcrush/), with no loss in quality, size, etc. You may be interested in trying it out on future images. Cheers! -- Wapcaplet 20:48, 2 May 2004 (UTC)
- P.S. - While I don't know of any graphical editing software that uses pngcrush, I have found that The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) tends to produce small, size-efficient files that cannot be further optimized with pngcrush. It is freely available for many computing platforms. -- Wapcaplet 22:46, 2 May 2004 (UTC)
Song/humor/namespaces/head spinning
Wikipedia:project namespace might explain it a bit. There is a lot of stuff on Wikipedia that should be on Meta for a number of reasons People don't use meta so they don't know where to put things, or it just doesn't occur to them to go there. Also, in the past the distinction between namespaces was less, so we historically have a lot of stuff here that has been here since before Meta was really used. People see that and think it must be the done thing and create new similar pages here rather than at meta.
m:Delete : this page does not belong to meta has some interesting ideas on what Meta should be used for. Basically, the Wikipedia namespace is meant to be for things which aid the building of the encyclopedia (policies and help pages mainly). Meta is more relaxed in accepting personal points of view, and also more focused on cross-project information. There are overlaps, but ideally I think pages listed at Wikipedia:Utilities#Fun should be moved to Meta at some point. It's probably best to wait until special:import is available so we can move the page history with them though.
The Utilities page is a good place to find them. I think m:Web Encyclopedia song would be the best place for the song (not necessarily that title, but somewhere on meta) as it isn't related to developing the encyclopedia. I hope that helps and I haven't just confused you even more. Angela. 12:38, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- I've just got to congratulate you to the wonderful lyrics of the Hotel Wikipedia-song. It made my day! \Mikez 03:23, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Help--or direct to resource
Need your help on two fronts:
1. What is a 'double redirect'? When 'moving' a page one is instructed to check for double redirects. When I moved Clement Moore->Clement Clarke Moore I was so paranoid I went and changed the link at every single occurance of his name (and there were alot of them). Would rather not have to do it again now that I've moved 'Dr. Harry Cooper'->Harry Cooper (veterinarian). Guess laziness (and time constraints, to be fair) is setting in.
2. Is there an easy way to check what categories exist in order to pick the best ones for a new article. E.g., I put 'Harry Spira' in List of dog topics (I think...?) but, since he's a noted Australian vet, he should be in some Australian category, too. There are just thousands, too many to read through the lists one by one. Any way to narrow it down?
Quill 22:51, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- 1. I've always assumed that they mean a redirect to a redirect but that you don't have to fret too much about single redirects. The former do show up in the What Links Here to the original page as redirects. Some people spend time finding even single redirects and fixing them; others might change them as they find them or leave them alone, claiming that those aren't the major draw on resources & we shd be spending time writing articles. I dont' believe there's an official policy on that. Elf | Talk 23:09, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- 2. Guess! ;-) I'm starting to find that it works, as more topics are created. E.g., I tried "Category:Desserts" and sure enough it existed. DOesn't work so well for "Category:Australians who write about dogs" kinds of things. I'm trying to change (but I don't seem to be asking in the right place) where the CATEGORIES text link at the bottom of each page goes. Right now it goes to the full list which, as you say, is completely useless. I'd like it to go to one of Wikipedia:Category, Category:Categories, or Category:Fundamental. Much better places to start looking.

thanks. elf
how could "elf" NOT be interested in the Xmas article? it's almost "feature quality", if someone is aggressive enough to whack away at that goofy history stuff. I haven't a feel yet for how rough to be on these things. i try to leave at least a kernel of the original. btw, i don't know if i'm performing this "talk" procedure correctly. redirect question
Hi Elf. I didn't know where to turn. I just tried to add a new article on the "Yellow-rumped Warbler", which species was formed by merger of "Myrtle" and "Audubon's" Warblers by the Amer.Ornith.Union. It's preserved in my "contributions", but the internal link still gets "redirected" to the pages for "Myrtle Warbler" and "Audubon's Warbler". I (generously) left these kind of outdated pages pretty much intact, as some people still "know" of them as separate. I can't figure out to re-redirect the link so "Yellow-rumped Warbler" gets its long overdue page. Thanks. Sfahey 22:03, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for your Elfin input. 'Twas all very confusing, but it appears that there was an old "yellow-rumped warbler" article buried under all the redirects. It resurfaced, with updates, perhaps due to the work of another wiki-birder. This fellow seems pretty expert, and I'll leave it the way he doctored it up. BTW, since this comment is entered under the "edit" function, instead of as a "new" message, will it register a "you have a message" message? Sfahey 16:56, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The last couple of entries from your list on the user page aren't from the same guy, BTW. The 8x.y.z.w IP is from Turkey, while the 193.198.x.y IP is from Croatia. Our guy is from the United States (likely Ohio).

Category N
I changed your redirects for "Category N" (N=1..5) to point at Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale instead of tropical cyclone. It's a bit more specific destination that'll tell people what the category means. -- Cyrius|✎ 04:57, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Slaughter house
I added a message at vfd. I've not only witnessed the game, I've been popped in the head by a mis-thrown tennis ball while I was doing recess duty, resulting in a bruised face and a schoolwide suspension of the game for a 2-week period. I have no idea how widespread the game is, though. Joyous 20:28, Sep 11, 2004 (UTC)
- Hi, Elf. :) I'm still kind of new here... I added the Slaughter house content to Wall Ball, but I'm unsure about making a redirect. Is it as simple as replacing all content on slaughter-house with #REDIRECT Wall Ball? I just want to be sure I don't screw anything up. Also, does one lose the history for the redirected article then? func(talk) 02:06, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Template:Visual System
Elf, I'm working on this (it's one of my areas of expertise) and it's, reasonably enough, locked. Problem is, the list on the template is incomplete; it needs two more items (optic tract and optic radiations) to be a parallel, thorough set. I'm not enough of a Wikipedian to determine who authored the locked item. Can you look into this and use your Magic Administrative Wand, if possible, to fix it? Thanks. jimhutchins 24.170.15.45 23:54, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, thanks for doing that. I removed the other dogs from the artificial selection article; I think we need some funny-looking sheep, pigs or cows to emphasise the importance to agriculture. Any offers welcome :) Dunc_Harris|☺ 22:33, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)
move page help
I've been moving the cat breed pages to titles that don't include the word "cat" (since it's a bit redundant). I need Scottish Fold cat moved to Scottish Fold, and British Shorthair cat moved to British Shorthair but there are redirects at the target pages, so the system won't let me move them. Could you assist me in this?

Response to question
I think it may have been an honest mistake but the user created a page called Parampara. I rollbacked the edit but the page was deleted (hence no edit history). I left a test message with the good intention that it was just a mistake or a misunderstanding rather then vandalism. Here is the log- 06:53, 17 Sep 2004 Stormie deleted "Parampara" (content was: '{delete}hi').
Thanks for the question hope this cleared things up for you. :) Arminius 16:03, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your very kind comments! I noticed that there was no section for food either, and thought it was a big gap in our image gallery (which is a great idea, IMO). nonstub stubs
I actually think this is worthwhile. I find the Stub category to be way too large to browse. It was over 6,000 items before I started categorizing them. Once they are categorized this should help people to update stubs in a particular category, for example only people stubs or movie stubs or science stubs. It also helped me to realize that most of the stubs are either geography related or biography related (others might find this interesting information as well). I have seen some discussions [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Stub) [3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Stub_categories#New_Stubs_to_Use) on this but I took on this endeavour myself. Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit§ion=new)| talk) 18:27, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)

Pine edit
Hi Elf - Hope you won't mind, I've restored the redirect to pinyon pine you removed, until the Single-leaf Pinyon page exists (which it will soon!); I reckon it is better to have a redirect to a summary page that gives at least some details of the species, than to a page that doesn't exist yet - MPF 20:37, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Piracy / Francis Drake query
Okay, I can see why you might not want to list Drake under the pirate list since he was only viewed as a pirate by a particular nation whom he was working against. That being the case, though, shouldn't similar privateers also be knocked off the list, like Sir Andrew Barton?
The only real difference I can see is that Drake was English and only declared a pirate by the Spanish, whereas Barton was Scottish and declared a pirate by the English. Oh, and Drake's probably a little more famous.
- You're right; I just didn't think about it because they weren't obvious duplications. I moved Barton and I'd have double-checked the others but WP is too slow for me to do that right now. Elf | Talk 20:25, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

History of California text
Thanks for your message.
I wrote it all in one sitting. I consulted the book to confirm names and dates. Nothing is quoted. The book is 235 pages, so the amount is well within fair use. The publisher is now defunct, but copies can be ordered from AbeBooks online, which is where I got mine. I confirmed much of Dr. Talbott's research for accuracy, but the fact is that little research has been done on the topic. The book is quite a find. Thus, Wikipedia's entry is now better than anything online!
I think I forgot to unclick the "This is a minor edit" box, but I don't know how to fix that after the fact.

Pronunciation
In Yosemite National Park, you also changed the SAMPA to IPA. Problem is, now I can't find anywhere that tells me how to read it! I looked at the article International Phonetic Alphabet which is clearly for linguists with a specialized terminology and not for people who just want to know h ow to pronounce things, and I looked at International Phonetic Alphabet for English but after scrolling up and down dozens of times I had still found only a couple of the characters. Can you point me to a table that shows the characters on the left and sample words on the right showing the pronunciation? (And add a link to such to each occurrence of this notation, as was originally there for the SAMPA notation)? Otherwise this is pretty much useless. Thanks. Elf | Talk 17:42, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Elf, All the symbols are there at International Phonetic Alphabet for English but I agree that they're not organized in a layman-friendly way. I'll work on adding a chart to that page that will make the symbols easier to find. --Angr 19:07, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- Okay, it's there. Look at the bottom of International Phonetic Alphabet for English and let me know if that's what you had in mind. --Angr 21:34, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

So...I should clean her eyes more, eh?
How funny to see a picture of my dog in the American Eskimo Dog page, along with a caption telling me that I don't clean her eyes enough. :-) I know. I'm guilty. I try. Wet washcloths every other day, scrubbing away, while the dog tries to lick the washcloth...and I just don't seem to be able to keep up with her capacity to make "eye boogers." I might try to take a better picture of her that still shows the staining and substitute it, though, as her laying on the bed with a rawhide bone isn't the most endearing (or in-focus). Watchlist problems?
The watchlist function doesn't always seem to work. For example: it alerted me to the discussion at [Dog park], but upon going there I noticed a lot of additions to the article that I never remember seeing before. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem (or am I becoming senile)?68.15.201.71 20:26, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- My guess is that we're all becoming senile and wikipedia is just a drug flashback. Of course, I never used drugs (except codeine for a while) so there goes that theory. I think every once in a while that I've missed something in my watchlist, but remember if e.g. you don't go through your watchlist for a couple of days (or longer) and there's a lot of activity, you'll see only the latest revision show up in the watchlist. Animal table colors
Thanks for explaining why dog breeds are pink, and why all mammals are pink. I won't try to change it again. Bremen 00:00, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)
About colours...it seems that not just mammals are pink, but reptiles and fishes and birds too..all animals? Isn't that a bit broad? or are there just not that many colours available?Bremen 08:50, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- OK, my mistake, you're right--it's all animals. It's hard to come up with clearly unique colors. Once you've gotten past the colors of the rainbow and obvious variants (pink, light blue), which don't even show up that well on some colors (not an obvious diff between light orange and orange, IMHO), you're starting to duplicate or look like you're duplicating. FYI, some other relevant links:
- Wikipedia:Infobox: A general description of what an infobox is (aka taxobox--originally for "taxonomy") plus a chart of all the colors used in various infoboxes plus samples of infoboxes from various projects. (I have no idea whethr this page has been kept up to date with newer projects.) You'll see there that Dogs is pink as a subset of Animals.
- If you scroll down there to Organisms, you'll see how the Tree of Life project divided the colors.
- Then you can go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life itself to see how much is involved; there's undoubtedly discussions buried on its various subpages & talk pages about why all animals are pink instead of dividing out, say, birds & fishes. (The colors & detailed usage of their infobox are linked to from there on a subpage.)
FYI, when we got to deciding the dog breed color, the discussion boiled down to this: Dog, as an Animal, would have a pink box. So for subarticles (e.g., breeds) related to dogs, it would be nice to be consistent--hence all dogs pink. Sure, we could decide to make different categories of dogs into different colors, but how to determine the categories? Use the FCI's groupings? But they don't match, for example, the AKC's groupings in many cases, with which most American dog fanciers would be more familiar; and any other kennel club has its own groupings. And no kennel club recognizes all breeds anyway, so we'd have to arbitrarily assign dogs to a group (which is what KCs do with multipurpose breeds, anyway), but that's not really our job...and what about developing breeds or crossbreeds? Some people are very sensitive about whether their breed is a "real" breed. So we decided it was much simpler to just be consistent with the Dog article. That's not to say that it couldn't change, but someone would have to come up with a cogent proposal that dog project members could understand and accept. Elf | Talk 17:07, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Dog articles
I'm going to take those suggestions to heart. Health is better than health issues for sure. How do I sign my responses...it's not the same as just dating it? Bremen 01:56, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- You did it here fine; probably just forgot to sign one or two out there because there was no sig/date line. :-) Easy to do. Elf | Talk 02:48, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
By the way, are we going to do those new tables with the breed characteristics? They look great. Bremen 01:56, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, but I'm waiting for some of the other fairly active dog people to comment. There are often good ideas & issues raised in these discussions, and the changes would be a bunch of work, so I'm waiting probably a couple or 3 days or until a couple or 3 other people have commented, probably whichever comes first. Oh you are so sweet, so helpful, if there were more like you around here wikipedia would be twice what it is..and it's already pretty damn cool. I've learned a lot from you and I don't think you're being too critical. This other guy posted two messages on a page I created called Anita Diamant about the tone of the article and that it needed to be cleaned up. But he didn't offer any suggestions or anything. Dogpatch
Yes, I did indeed sell Dogpatch because I didn't quite have the time for it. I haven't forgotten all the work you put into it either! I doubt I'll do much here though, since I now run my own business and it just always seems any time I spend at the computer should go back into that. But it's fun to take some time now and again for something different! --Maryjo313 22:20, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Sparky
Hi. You shifted the content of Sparky to Sparky (comic) as a cut-and-paste job, then created a disambigation page at the old title, where the history of the comic article still existed. I am about to repair the history. In future can you move the article to the new title, then create the disambiguation page over the top of the redirect newly created? That way, the credit for the article content stays with the article itself. Thanks. - Mark 12:28, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Or not. I can't split the history of the page, because of the block-compressed-revisions crap that prevents deletion of some articles (including Sparky). So it'll have to wait. :) - Mark 12:35, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Fair enough. I didn't look too closely :) When the deletion is reactivated, we should be able to split that page's history up using the partial undelete feature. - Mark 03:16, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

common icon for disambiguation pages — vfd
- Thanks Elf for the information! I am busy with #My contributions.
- commons:Disambig.png is used in dozens of languages with different alphabets to indicate disambiguation pages. Maybe you remember it was one of the first issues I experienced at Wikipedia. I did not promote it because I work very hard on items related to en:Wikipedia:Template:Interwikiconflict, on the multiline version of GlobalWPSearch (http://vs.aka-online.de/globalwpsearch/index_multiline.html) and even have no time to run my bot. If you like to start a discussion about inserting an icon in Template:Disambig (see Which disambiguation image do you like most?) it would speed up things. Old Yeller
I figured that adding a separate article about the movie was appropriate, and that seemed to be a good split of the content. Old Yeller was the first movie that made many of us boomers cry. Mark in Richmond. Vaoverland 01:48, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)
Dog subheads
Yeah, wow I'm finally done! As for Disneylang, I've already been and it kinda sucked. The lineups were way too long. Anyway the list didn't take as long as I'd thought. Now I should probably go through each article and make sure it has all the categories. No more stubs should be the goal. This could take a long time but it'll look good at the end.
Thanks for the dog stubs link! I should put it on my watchlist. Bremen 06:30, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I figured I'd throw her in a closet and take her out again when she's grown up and see whether she's any good. ;-) Yes, she has different-colored eyes, like her mama who is a stupendous agility dog. I hope that she will take after her mom (and her dad's a pretty darned good agility dog, too) and after my three preceding good-to-excellent agility dogs. I brought her home yesterday at just under 3 months and she's exhibiting classic eye behavior on my other dogs already. She has a great-grandmother or something who was a multiple herding champion--agility is expensive and time-consuming enough that I don't really want to get into herding, too. Bull Terrier
Oh Elf...I have really lapsed with my dog breed work. How do you sustain the intensity? I do intend to locate the sources but right now I'm like ehh. Sooo many things going on in my life. But yeah I'll try to get back to you. Bremen 15:46, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
- Me again. I found out that one of the bull terrier pics is actually a photo of a figurine. I feel kinda dumb but it's a funny story. Very lifelike statue. So I should just remove that picture unless I call it "Bull Terrier in art" or something. Bremen 07:15, 7 May 2005 (UTC)
Corgi photo
Thanks for the diplomatic response. It is my photo but not my dog. To his credit, he is a muscular dog, has quite a heavy winter coat and older dogs tend to get thick manes. Whilst I agree he is "well-fed", I am told that the vet thinks he isn't fat. However you may use the photo elsewhere, provided that you save his blushes by removing his name. Maltese page
Hi Elf, can you please check the Maltese (dog) page and let me know what you think? I've added some references and more history. It still needs a little tweaking on the wording in some places but that's for another day. :o) I am trying to gather some information for the Coton de Tulear page as I have a friend who is very knowledgeable about the breed and may be able to expand on the article. Thanks. maltmomma 15:03, May 9, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks Elf. I appreciate the help and feedback. Under the references though, the 2nd Ed. was updated by Dennis Carno in 1970 with the 1st Ed. written by Virginia T. Leitch. (it's the ultimate info on Maltese to date) The rearrangement looks like she wrote the 2nd Ed. I'm unsure of the correct format though and that may be correct. Will you recheck and see what you think? I appreciate your help. maltmomma 17:45, May 10, 2005 (UTC)

Just - Hey!
Your name is all over my watch list right now, and I thought I'd come over to see who you were, and then I saw dogs, and then hemangiosarcoma, and then... well, I just had to say hi. My beloved Irish werewolf died quite unexpectedly of that, less than two months after her greyhound brother died of a more obvious cancer. This was back in 1993-94, but the recollection can still - ack, well, you must know. Anyway, hi. I'm relatively new, and tend to stick around the food areas unless in my wanderings around here I step on broken glass. --Mothperson 22:43, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC) press here to record complaints
Yes. I know exactly what you mean. It doesn't matter how old, or how long you've had them. I'm on my fifth and sixth. I no longer make myself crazy thinking about when they will leave. I just try to enjoy the loan. So, anyway, it's great to meet you - food, dogs, and all. I've only been around a few months, so I haven't really found my place here, if such a thing exists. But I'm still maniacal about the list of foods named after people, and don't ask me to explain why because I don't know. Yet.
I will probably come bugging you for advice, now that you've re-emerged. I hope you don't mind. If you do, you can ignore me. I just created my litter box, but now I'm wondering how to get it onto my user page section, because I know I have seen other people's sandboxes tabbed nicely into their regular user pages.
