Reverting 67.175.84.210
Thanks for the revert of 67.175.84.210 - whom I have given a 24 hour block. --Uncle Ed (El Dunce) 13:18, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Tools
It's OK - various internal server errors are normal (well, not normal, but at least expected) - the tools stuff is still pretty alpha quality right now. It'd run out of SQL connections due to a resource leak allocating them and not freeing them... perhaps once I'm done rewriting it it'll be a bit more stable :-) — Kate Turner | Talk 10:47, 2004 Nov 4 (UTC) (And they say Java has automatic garbage collection...)
Michael Collins image
Hiya. Thanks for the messsage. From what I can discover no-one knows who took the original picture. It may belong to one of the many defunct Irish newspapers or have been taken by a private citizen but whomever took it is unknown. Because of its age (it was taken before the end of August 1922), the inability of anyone to find who took it and because no-one has ever claimed copyright (if they did, given its widespread usage they would be very very rich) it is universally presumed either to be out of copyright (expired), lost copyright (ie, the descendants of the copyright holder don't know they hold it, and as its origins are unclear they are all but certain never to be able establish legally that they hold copyright) or been seen through usage as entitled to be used without copyright restrictions.
As an example of how widespread this image is, I've just passed a Sinn Fein office where it is displayed in a poster. I have seen it in the Fine Gael headquarters, it is widely used by all Irish newspapers, history book, reference manuals, etc. It is even on the wall of the internet cafe I am in right now. Not one of the sources have sought copyright permission to use it (I've asked. They say they don't know who even to approach about it, so unclear is its origins!) If wikipedia was to be challenged as to copyright they would find themselves in a queue behind just about every Irish publisher, every author, every political party, every publisher of posters and about three million Irish people. It would find itself in the company of HMSO (Her Majesty's Stationery Office), and state publications in the US, the EU, the UK, the RoI, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, the SDLP, the Ulster Unionist Party, etc etc. If it ever turns up that someone claims and can establish that they own copyright the image can be removed immediately. But from I can understand from everyone I have checked with, the chances of anyone establishing that are slim. And even if they did, the nature of its usage for over fifty years would make the chances of they being able to enforce copyright so slim as to be non-existent.
I hope that clarifies matters. FearÉIREANN 17:31, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the thanks (re medical school article)
Hi Big Dave,
Thanks for your message! :-)
Medical education is so diverse across the world - both from country to country and from university to university - so no one article is going to easily cover the full range. Rather, I have attempted to keep the article broad whilst giving a few examples.
Post-graduate career pathways also vary considerably from place to place, eg nations like the USA have an earlier streaming process, whilst nations such as Australian or the UK have a greater emphasis on early undifferentiated practice before moving into a longer specialisation process. However, I decided that the medical school article was not the place for this, and so only left broad information.
I see you are seeking entry into a medical program - best of luck if you have not already attained this!
Cheers, --DaveB 05:15, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I have answered to your question as much as I could. -Hapsiainen 20:20, Nov 16, 2004 (UTC)
You shouldn't have put the image on the Possibly unfree images list. It is only for images that are both unfree and break the fair use rules. To make sure of its fair use status, I listed it on Wikipedia:Copyright problems#Fair use claims needing a second opinion. Could you remove the image from Possibly unfree images list? -Hapsiainen 14:14, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
- And the page really is only for such images, although it isn't explained clearly enouh. See Wikipedia talk:Possibly unfree images#What if fair use can be claimed? -Hapsiainen 20:51, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
- I already explained the most important reason for the fair use status in Copyright problems page. Now I have written a very elaborate explanation in the image description page. -Hapsiainen 00:19, Nov 20, 2004 (UTC)
Category:NMDA antagonists to Category:NMDAR antagonists
I was tempted to make the change you made but I hesitated because the inexact expression "NMDA antagonist" is almost as common as the correct one in the scientific literature. Actually, if it were not a category, "NMDA antagonists" would have deserved a redirect to the correct article instead of mere deletion. So long, Delta G 18:56, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Until category redirection is supported, a very pseudo redirection: Category:NMDA_antagonists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:NMDA_antagonists). I had to use the external link trick.

G'day
You edited the page Desaparecidos_(band) ([1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Desaparecidos_%28band%29&oldid=5449021)), and i would like to know if you would have a problem with me deleating this page (as it is currently a redirect), then move what is currently at Desaparecidos (which is about the band) to the newly vacated space at Desaparecidos_(band), and then write a new article about Desaparecidos (the disappeared people in south america) at Desaparecidos? The bellman 03:13, 2004 Nov 30 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks a lot, i was planning on asking Ambi, but if you're an admin that's even better. Anyway, could you wait two or three more days, just to allow anyone to object on the Desaparecidos talk page. The bellman 01:49, 2004 Dec 1 (UTC)
- Well, i think that if it was something more controversial, then the requested moves might be the way to go, but, this is really pretty clear cut. The bellman 10:50, 2004 Dec 1 (UTC)

Page view counts
Unfortunately not. The hit counts are produced from the Squid logs using webalizer, which is currently not being run because it puts too much of a strain on the servers. It's not possible to extract the number of hits from the database (due to caching, among other things). Regards — Kate Turner | Talk 22:36, 2004 Dec 5 (UTC)

Web Template Edit
Hello Diberri. In regards to the web template edit, you said > "wikify, stubbify, rm ext. link ad/spam -- probably should merge with web design" Web Template is one of the new topics, I'm working on. I agree the article is a stub and needs more expanding. I don't think the link advert counts as spam however. Most importantly, a web template is totally different than web design. It is part of web design but a template is completely different therefore don't think it should be merged. sid007 08:07, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

List of stars
- This category contains article about taxa about the family level in the order Anura - the frogs and toads. According to the Category:Frogs statement, only articles in the Family (biology) level of frogs should be there, not the genera or species level articles. If it were to be similar to the frogs category, then individual stars would still not appear on Category:Stars page. 132.205.94.190 00:45, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Leopard frog, etc
- Since the Leopard Frog is miscategorized, there's gonna need to be cleanup in the Frogs category... (if you follow the statement of meaning on the Category Frongs page) Leopard Frog is a genus, not a family (Stars are individuals, not types as well, so Kermit the Frog is an individual, like say... LTP question
Hi, i am a layman and i am not sure whether i understand this sentence right: Though a single presentation of the stimulus is USUALLY not sufficient to induce LTP, repeated presentations cause the postsynaptic cell to be progressively depolarized.
Does it mean that that some things are written to our memory completely by chance? that some quick glance can be stored in our memory just because of rigtht polarization of the postsynaptic cell? and on the other hand something we want to remember may not be joined by right polarization and therefore we just forget it?
thank you for a respond _t_rosival(snail)hotmail.com (it is from your article about LTP (early LTP))

Fraser Mustard
Hi,
Dr. Mustard is notable for many reasons (which are included in the article), in no particular order:
- He is a Companion of the Order of Canada. Canada's highest civilian award which is only presented to 130 or so living people.
- He received the Order of Ontario. A provincial equivalent to the Order of Canada.
- He is a co-founder of a medical school at one of Canada's significant universities, McMaster.
- He is well respected doctor and is a member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame
- He was involved in the study of Blood Coagulation
- There are currently 9,330 entries for "Fraser Mustard" in Google.
This seems to be enough. If you feel it isn't, it is your right to put this article up for a Vote for Deletion.
Thanks, --YUL89YYZ 19:50, Jan 4, 2005 (UTC)

Reference desk
I have answered questions on the RD about the songs at the beginning of the CSI series, algebra, where to find the instruction manual for a Hitachi HB-B101 Bread Maker, where to find a service manual for a GMC Caballero, basic information about travelling to the Czech Republic, where to find reports of volcanic activity, how to get 220V out of a 110V breaker box, one about the theoretical maximum speed of CDs, and hazarded a guess at the nutritional value of mice and rats. And that is what hasn't been archived.
But at some point, you have to ask yourself what people are thinking. This "Tina" would have had to have expended much more effort finding the Reference desk than she would have in using a search engine to find it. Also, about the only way she is likely to have found it is by using a search engine, meaning she inexplicably did not search for what she was actually looking for. Add on top of that the "Urgently.", and I just lost it.
Message left here because this isn't on-topic for the RD. -- Cyrius|✎ 00:25, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for uploading Image:Streptococcus small.PNG. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? POV warrior + it's generally considered bad practice to link to other namepsaces from the main namespace
On reflection, I think I agree it is not an article candidate, but there is a growing usage there. Maybe it should be a wictionary entry? ---- Charles Stewart 00:04, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- But you already gave it an entry in Wikipedia:Glossary :-) It's Wikipedia-specific slang and doesn't really belong in Wikipedia or Wiktionary. --David Iberri | Talk 00:10, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Right you are. The creation of the article was to have a node to point to, but I guess WP:G does as well ---- Charles Stewart 00:22, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You wrote: it's generally considered bad practice to link to other namepsaces from the main namespace abpout my linking to my homepage from the disambig page. Out of curiosity: where is this guideline? I have the idea I've done this in a few places. ---- Charles Stewart 01:01, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think there's a policy that literally says to avoid internamespace links from an article. But I think it follows from Wikipedia:Avoid self-references and its associated talk page. The idea is that user pages (and any other pages outside the main namespace) are not part of the encyclopedia itself; they're part of Wikipedia's editorial process and the reader shouldn't be taken there unexpectedly. (On the other hand, if a particular non-article page has a useful discussion, example, or explanation that's relevant to an article, then it's perfectly ok to link to it -- though there are probably better alternatives -- as long as one uses the external link syntax.) Best, David Iberri | Talk 06:37, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. There was another thing I wrote (on what is now Anti-Islamic sentiment and positions) that violated this policy (explicit charactersisation of editor's positions on the article in a NPOV sticker-like text), but it may have halted an edit war and it's now gone. ---- Charles Stewart 08:45, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- That's fine, IMO, but usually one of the boilerplate messages will suffice. --David Iberri | Talk 17:24, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Right, but in that context, which boilerplate texts could be put on was one of the fiercest bones of controversy. ---- Charles Stewart 17:30, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- True, choosing can be a bit contentious. What you did seems reasonable to me. --David Iberri | Talk 17:32, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)
