USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy. As of 2005, Oscar Austin is operating in DESRON 22. The ship performed a cruise in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004.
USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79) is the first ship named for Private First Class Oscar P. Austin, USMC, a winner of the Medal of Honor. His mother, Mrs. Mildred Austin, was the matron of honor at the commissioning of the ship which bears his name.
Flight IIA Ships
Oscar Austin is the first ship of the Flight IIA subclass of the Arleigh Burke class. Compared to the previous ships, Flight IIA is ten feet longer and approximately 700 tons heavier. Flight IIA ships carry two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters and six additional VLS cells compared to the Flight I/II ships. To prevent the additional superstructure aft from fouling radar returns, the rear-facing SPY-1D panels are elevated by one level. Oscar Austin is one of two Flight IIA ships using the 5"/54 calibur naval rifle, the other is Roosevelt (DDG-80), and thus cannot use certain advanced munitions which require the longer 5"/62 calibur gun mounted beginning with USS Winston S Churchill.
