Broly as Super Saiyan 1

A Super Saiyan (also referred to as SSJ as Japanese for Saiyan is Saiya-jin) is a fictional special advanced and powerful state of the Saiyan race in the manga Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z and the anime Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. This can be performed at at least four levels, each more powerful than the previous.

Super Saiyan: The Legend

The ability to become a Super Saiyan was once considered to be a myth, because it had not been performed for over a thousand years until Son Goku accomplished it when he was fighting Freeza on Planet Namek. Their appearance is different in each form, more so in the fourth.

Freeza feared the Super Saiyan legend and destroyed Planet Vegeta in the hope that the Super Saiyan legend would never be complete.

It has been stated that female Saiyans (Pan, Bra) cannot make the Transformation. Aside from this, every Saiyan still alive (as of the Freeza Saga) has managed to reach at least the first level.

There are many stated rumors about the requirements of the transformation. One is that in order for a Saiyan to transform, he must have lost his tail. Also, if your father had been a Super Saiyan by the time you were born, you would be born without a tail, and have the ability to transform yourself at a very early age (Goten, Chibi Trunks). In general, it requires a pure heart or purpose, an intense rage, and formidable power to undergo the transformation.

Fans debate over the identity of the true Legendary Super Saiyan. While FUNimation states it is Broly, many fans say it is Son Goku, because Goku was first seen turning Super Saiyan in the fight against Frieza. It can not be Broly though, since Broly was not in the manga and is only found in the non-canon movies.

Super Saiyan Levels

Here is a description of each Super Saiyan level, and the Saiyans who reached the level (in chronological order).

Super Saiyan 1

(SSJ) Hair stands on end, and glows a bright gold color (It should be noted that the hair color is stated as gold in the manga. Common misconceptions lead people to believe the color is yellow or blonde). Their eyes turn to a bright green.

This form was first seen in the Freeza Saga.

Super Saiyan 1 was reached by:

Super Saiyan 2nd Grade

(USSJ) Considered an intermediate state between SSJ1 and SSJ2. Although never given a name in either the manga or anime, it's known as Ultra Super Saiyan (USSJ) by fans, or some sites call it Ascended Super Saiyan (ASSJ). The noticable difference between SSJ1 and USSJ is that the muscle mass of the one going ASSJ is increased substantially.

This form was first seen in the Imperfect Cell Saga.

Super Saiyan 2nd Grade was reached by:

Super Saiyan 3rd Grade

(USSJ2) Even further into the USSJ form. Muscle mass is increased even more so, however a severe loss in speed is a result of the augmented muscle mass. Ultimately, this form is rendered useless because of that flaw.

This form was first seen in the Perfect Cell Saga.

Super Saiyan 3rd Grade was reached by:

  • Future Trunks
  • Vegeta (Although it was never shown in neither the manga or anime that Vegeta reached this form, it can be assumed that Vegeta can attain this form because Trunks makes a comment durring his fight with Cell that indicates that Vegeta could have attained this form, but decided against it because he knew that his speed would have suffered.)
  • Son Goku

Super Saiyan 1 Perfect Form

In this form, also known as Super Saiyan Full Power, the user requires no energy to become a Super Saiyan. It is the ultimate level of Super Saiyan 1, and used in order to spend more energy to gain new levels.

This form was first seen in the Cell Games Saga.

Super Saiyan 1 Perfect Form was reached by:

Super Saiyan 2

(SSJ2) Hair becomes more pointed and continues to glow. This is the first form that has silver electricity in the aura. A visible increase in muscle mass also occurs. This is the true Ascended Super Saiyan Form as stated by Trunks, with a great increase in both strength and speed. It was not referred to as Super Saiyan 2 until the Buu Saga, by Goku (until then it was simply Ascended Super Saiyan). Gohan was the first one to reach SSJ2 when Android 16's head was crushed by Cell. Gohan's rage at Cell combined with Android 16's encouragement just before his demise, caused Gohan to stop holding back and ascend to the next level. In Movie 9, Goku encourages Gohan to show his full power against Bojack and his goons, thus Gohan turns SSJ2. The energy-draining wires have no effect on him then, and he eliminates Bojacks strongest goons with a simple punch/kick, as that simply cut the goons in two.

This form is first seen in the Cell Games Saga.

Super Saiyan 2 was reached by:

Super Saiyan 3

(SSJ3) The hair of a Saiyan powering up to this level grows until it reaches almost to the knees at the back, the eyebrows disappear while the brow ridge becomes more pronounced, and the eyes stay green (characters who do not normally have black pupils will gain them). Muscle mass is visibly increased once again, but the muscles remain compact, and do not impede the Saiyan's speed. While immensly powerful, this transformation requires far too much energy too be used in the natural world for long, and will last half an hour at max, then an hour is required before the technique can be used again. However, in Other World, Goku could use it for as long as he wished.

This form was first seen in the Buu Saga.

Super Saiyan 3 was reached by:

  • Son Goku
  • Gotenks
  • Vegetto (Although it was never shown in neither the manga or anime that Vegetto reached this form, it can be assumed that Vegetto can attain this form because he has all the abilities of Goku and Vegeta. One of Goku's abilities is to turn Super Saiyan 3.)

Super Saiyan 4

(SSJ4) The Saiyan's hair becomes black again, the tail is returned and the body is covered in red fur. A Saiyan in this form also possesses a red trim around the eyes and over the eye lids. This form can only be reached after transforming into a Golden Oozaru and then gaining conscious control over the form. (Note that this form is non-canonical to the original manga and anime by Akira Toriyama as it only appears in the anime Dragon Ball GT and that this is the only form that wasn't actually created by Akira Toriyama, but a company that desired to continue the Dragonball series. However, Toriyama created several of the character designs for the series, and has stated that the series more or less went in a direction that he himself would have taken it.) When Goku was changed into a child, while a Super Saiyan 4 he could keep his adult body.

This form was first seen in the Bebi Saga

Super Saiyan 4 was reached by:

Super Saiyan 5

SSJ5 is a popular item of discussion with Dragon Ball fans and in fan fiction. Unfortunately, the existance of this form is only speculation as it is not explicitly seen in any of the official Dragon Ball series. The level is alluded to in Dragon Ball GT, but the show was cancelled before any characters could reach it.
