Oozaru is a fictional term from the manga Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z and the anime Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT. It is used to describe the giant primate-like creature that Saiyans can transform into.
Oozarus are often referred to as apes, although they have tails and are vaguely similar to baboons.
In order for the transformation to take place, the Saiyan still needs to have a tail, as the glands responsible for initiating the transformation are located exclusively there. He also needs to absorb green spectrum radiation through his eyes at a rate of 17.400.000 xeno units per second. The easiest way to achieve this is to gaze at the full moon, although Vegeta once made himself transform by firing an extremely bright blast of energy into the air, then staring at it. In addition, during Dragon Ball GT Bulma created the Brute Ray, a machine that could induce the transformation on a Saiyan even if the Saiyan did not have a tail.

An Oozaru's power level is equal to the Saiyan's power level prior to the transformation multiplied by ten. The Oozaru will always portray evil and destructive characteristics even in the cases of the good Saiyans and Halfbreed Saiyans.
An alternative and far stronger type of Oozaru, known as a Golden Oozaru, can be seen in the Dragon Ball GT series. It is attained by Saiyans who have a tail and have attained the Super Saiyan form along with looking at a full plantary body ( full moon, full earth, etc ). Aside from its fur being gold-coloured, it appearance is identical to that of a regular Oozaru. Unlike regular Oozaru however a Saiyan in this form can fire blasts from their hands as well as their jaws. A Golden Oozaru can transform into a Super Saiyan 4.
