Dragon Ball GT

Dragon Ball GT (Japanese: ドラゴンボール GT Doragon Bōru GT) is the sequel to the anime Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, but is the only one of the three series that is not based on a manga by Akira Toriyama. (The GT in the title stands for "Grand Tour" as the anime was originally envisioned as a road trip.)

Possibly due to its status as an "illegitimate" Dragon Ball series, Japanese fans did not come to embrace it and it ran for only 64 episodes between 1996 and 1997. As a result of negative fan reaction, the show suffers from an inconsistency of tone as the early episodes were closer to the humor of Dragon Ball than the action of Dragon Ball Z. Akira Toriyama was not part of the writing squad in GT until the Super 17 and Shadow Dragon Saga and once he began writing again the producers made a sudden shift to curb waning interest. The latter episodes are action-packed and violence-heavy. Toriyama decided that it was time to end Dragon Ball and announced that there would not be another series. This proves rumors of Dragon Ball AF being untrue.

The English adaptation of series ran first-run episodes on Cartoon Network between 2003 and 2004, but the adaptation by FUNimation had a major edit. The first 16 episodes of the series, the Black Star Dragonball Saga, have been cut and replaced by a single US-only explanation episode which became the new series premier. This edit was implemented by the producers of the series to prevent viewers from possibly being turned off by the differently toned early episodes. (The missing episodes have been announced to be available on DVD.) This edit reduced the English-language series to only a 49 episode run. 15 of the first 16 episodes have been seen on Cartoon Network. The entire series has been aired on the Toonami channel in the UK.

The story picks up from from where Goku is wished back into a child again with the Black Star Dragonballs and they must be gathered within a year or the Earth will be destroyed, thus embarking Goku and his companions through space to find the Black Star Dragonballs. Afterwards the series focuses on the final battles of Goku and what happens onward.
