The parish has a total area of 1,060 km2 (409 mi2). 1,058 km2 (408 mi2) of it is land and 3 km2 (1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

The racial makeup of the parish is 46.53% White, 52.42% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,873 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.90% are married couples living together, 18.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
