Geography
The parish has a total area of 1,646 km2 (635 mi2). 1,615 km2 (624 mi2) of it is land and 31 km2 (12 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.86% water.

The racial makeup of the parish is 67.16% White, 31.61% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,754 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.30% are married couples living together, 16.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
