Founded in 1909 as a school for the cathedral choir boys, the school currently has approximately 500 students spread between grades 4 and 12. It is located on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral along with the all-girls school National Cathedral School.
The faculty at the school are highly renowned. They include:
- Wallace B. Ragan, classics expert
- Donna Denize, poet
- Curtis Sittenfeld, novelist, including "Prep" (through June 2005)
The headmaster as of 2005 is Z. Vance Wilson. Past headmasters include Jack McCune, Mark Mullin, and Charles Martin. All headmasters become Canons of the cathedral automatically. Martin was famous for the statement, "St. Albans exists to help boys not into the kingdom of Harvard but into the kingdom of Heaven."
The Black Rose Vaughn Keith National Education Award was created as a memorial for the school's former Latin and Classics master, a tough but brilliant teacher and sometime punk-rock god, lead singer of Judy's Fixation.
Among those that sit on the school's governing board are Senate Majority Leader William Frist.
