Schroeppel, New York

Schroeppel is a town located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,566. The name derives from the Schroeppel family, early land owners of the area.

The Town of Schroeppel is in the southeast part of the county.

History

The Town of Schroeppel was formed in 1832 from the Town of Volney.

Geography

The southwest town line, marked by the Oneida River, is the border of Onondaga County, New York. The southwest town line is partly formed by the Oswego River. The Erie Canal is on the south border of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 111.9 km² (43.2 mi²). 109.6 km² (42.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.01% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,566 people, 3,251 households, and 2,347 families residing in the town. The population density is 78.2/km² (202.4/mi²). There are 3,590 housing units at an average density of 32.8/km² (84.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.79% White, 0.39% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,251 households out of which 36.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 22.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,662, and the median income for a family is $45,766. Males have a median income of $31,191 versus $27,864 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,581. 9.7% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.4% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Pennellville -- A hamlet in the center of the town, named after Richard Pennell, MD.
  • Peter Scott Swamp -- A swamp in the south part of the town.
  • Phoenix -- The Village of Phoenix.
  • Roosevelt Corners -- A hamlet by the north town line.
  • Sand Ridge -- A hamlet in the south part of the town.
  • Shephard Corners -- A hamlet by the north town line.
  • Stewart Corners -- A hamlet north of Peter Scott Swamp.
