Phoenix, New York

Phoenix is a village located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,251. The name is derived from Alexander Phoenix.

History

The village was incorporated in 1848.

Geography

The village is on the north side of the Oswego River and Erie Canal.

Phoenix is located at 43°13'53" North, 76°17'53" West (43.231324, -76.298066)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.80% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,251 people, 959 households, and 578 families residing in the village. The population density is 762.4/km² (1,966.2/mi²). There are 1,041 housing units at an average density of 352.6/km² (909.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.22% White, 0.36% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 959 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the village the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $30,199, and the median income for a family is $36,442. Males have a median income of $29,542 versus $22,412 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,434. 13.2% of the population and 9.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
