Volney is a town located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,094. The town was named after a French author. who toured the area in 1808.

History
The Town of Volney was formed from part of the Town of Mexico in 1806. The original name of the town was Fredericksburgh, which was changed to Volney in 1811.
Geography
The west town border is marked by the Oswego River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 127.3 km² (49.2 mi²). 125.1 km² (48.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.73% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,094 people, 2,188 households, and 1,686 families residing in the town. The population density is 48.7/km² (126.2/mi²). There are 2,333 housing units at an average density of 18.7/km² (48.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.08% White, 0.26% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,188 households out of which 38.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.11.
In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 104.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $43,532, and the median income for a family is $46,408. Males have a median income of $40,585 versus $25,974 for females.
