Salta is a province of Argentina, located in the northwest of the country. The capital is Salta. The province has a population of 1,079,051 (2001), and covers an area of 155,488 km². Neighboring provinces are from the west clockwise Formosa, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Tucumán and Catamarca. To the north it borders Bolivia and Paraguay and to the west lies Chile .
The province is divided in 23 departments (Spanish: departamentos).
