Santiago del Estero is a province of Argentina, located in the north of the country. The capital is Santiago del Estero. The province has a population of 804,457 (2001), and covers an area of 136,351 km². Neighbouring provinces are from the north clockwise Salta, Chaco, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Catamarca and Tucumán. The Guasayán sierra rises in the west and those of Ambargasta Sumampa in the south. Two main rivers cross the province of from north to south: the Dulce River and the Salado River.
The province is divided into 27 departments (Spanish: departamentos)
