New York Minute (movie)
|
New York Minute is an American movie, produced by Time Warner and released on May 7, 2004, starring Mary-Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen and Eugene Levy. It also co-stars Jared Padalecki, a regular in the popular television show, Gilmore Girls. In addition, the movie features a special appearance by Bob Saget, former Full House co-star of the Olsen sisters, as himself.
Plot outline
In the film, the Olsens play sisters with diametrically opposed personalities. Jane (Ashley) is an anal retentive, germ phobic, over-achiever while Roxy (Mary-Kate) is a sloppy, school-skipping slacker.
Most of the plot happens in one day. Jane's goal for the day is to get to Columbia University in New York City to make a presentation at a scholarship competition. Roxy's goal is to skip school to attend the production of a rock music video, also in New York City. Roxy's truancy officer (Levy) is in hot pursuit. The twins inadvertently get involved with a media piracy ring and endure a series of comical mishaps, before finally realizing what is missing in their lives.
Critical response
Like most of the entries in the Olsen twins's filmography, New York Minute is intended to be a vehicle for the sisters. As such, it was met with what could be described as "anticipated criticism" on the part of both the media (with the exception of some teenage-oriented publications and websites run by fans) and critics. Some have argued that this would be backed up by the fact that the movie was unsuccessful at the box office (or a "bomb"). Among the most common critics, the movie is said to be a succession of clichés tied together by a weak script, in addition to oversensualizing the image of the sisters, allegedly in order to capitalize on the "frenzy" brought on by the twins's 18th birthday. Additionally, many have pointed out that the movie, which takes place in New York City and which has "New York" in its title, was filmed almost entirely in Canada.
Notwithstanding the criticism in whatever valid points, one could argue that the movie was successful in its primary goal, since it did reach its target audience and helped further the image — and the businesses — of the Olsen sisters.
