Luhansk Oblast (Луганська область, Luhans’ka oblast’ or Луганщина, Luhanshchyna in Ukrainian) is an oblast (province) of eastern Ukraine. Its capital is Luhans'k. The population is largely Russian-speaking.
The area of the region is 26,700 km², its population (as of 2004-05-01) is 2.5 million.
On November 26, 2004 the Luhansk Oblast declared its autonomy and asked to be admitted into the Russian Federation.
