Keene is a city located in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,563. It is the county seat of Cheshire CountyTemplate:GR.
The town is well known for holding the Guinness Book of World Records record for most lit Jack o'lanterns at one time and place. Each year the town attempts to surpass its own record during the Pumpkin Fest held in late October.
Geography
Keene is located at 42°56'33" North, 72°17'18" West (42.942452, -72.288368)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 97.3 km² (37.6 mi²). 96.6 km² (37.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.67% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 22,563 people, 8,955 households, and 5,086 families residing in the city. The population density is 233.5/km² (604.8/mi²). There are 9,295 housing units at an average density of 96.2/km² (249.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.66% White, 0.39% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,955 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the city the population is spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 18.9% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $37,033, and the median income for a family is $49,935. Males have a median income of $32,720 versus $25,488 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,544. 10.7% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
