Franklin is a city located in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, at the merging of the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee Rivers to form the Merrimack River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,405.

Geography

Franklin is located at 43°26'49" North, 71°39'25" West (43.446956, -71.656966)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 75.5 km² (29.2 mi²). 71.4 km² (27.6 mi²) of it is land and 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.45% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,405 people, 3,319 households, and 2,193 families residing in the city. The population density is 117.7/km² (304.9/mi²). There are 3,676 housing units at an average density of 51.5/km² (133.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.10% White, 0.38% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,319 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 27.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,613, and the median income for a family is $41,698. Males have a median income of $32,318 versus $25,062 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,155. 12.9% of the population and 8.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.2% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
