Dover is a city located in Strafford County, New Hampshire, on the Cocheco River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,884. It is the county seat of Strafford CountyTemplate:GR. Settled in 1623, Dover is the oldest permanent settlement in N.H. and the 7th oldest in the U.S.

Geography
Dover is located at 43°11'28" North, 70°52'43" West (43.190984, -70.878533)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 75.2 km² (29.0 mi²). 69.2 km² (26.7 mi²) of it is land and 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.06% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 26,884 people, 11,573 households, and 6,492 families residing in the city. The population density is 388.5/km² (1,006.2/mi²). There are 11,924 housing units at an average density of 172.3/km² (446.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.47% White, 1.12% African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.36% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,573 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.9% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.87.
In the city the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $43,873, and the median income for a family is $57,050. Males have a median income of $37,876 versus $27,329 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,459. 8.4% of the population and 4.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Dover is currently experiencing a cultural rebirth as the city prepares to enter a period of wealthier business tenants in the downtown area, partially due to the Cocheco River being dredged to Portsmouth. Storefronts are being refaced, if not replaced outright with trendier locales, more upscale and luxurious than their 1990 counterparts. There has been a noticable addition of eateries to the downtown area, boosting the attractiveness to the slightly older crowd, many of whom are willing to pay 20 dollars per entree. Bordering neighbors Newington and Portsmouth, Dover has poised itself as the next popular tourist destination, with a newfound pride for its history. Dover now courts random visitors and locals alike with regular community events. Revitalization efforts include a newly refinished outdoor concert auditorium, and walking trails along the Cocheco River. Coffeehouses, martini bars, nightclubs, Irish pubs, door to door seafood restaurants, Italian pizza joints, authentic Indian, and a cajun bistro, all cater to the wealthier working class and UNH crowd alike.
