Grenada County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 23,263. Its county seat is Grenada6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,164 km² (449 mi²). 1,092 km² (422 mi²) of it is land and 71 km² (28 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.14% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,263 people, 8,820 households, and 6,297 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 9,973 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 57.92% White, 40.93% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,820 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.90% are married couples living together, 18.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,385, and the median income for a family is $33,115. Males have a median income of $28,969 versus $21,567 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,786. 20.90% of the population and 17.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.30% of those under the age of 18 and 26.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
