Attala County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 19,661. Its county seat is Kosciusko6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,909 km² (737 mi²). 1,904 km² (735 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,661 people, 7,567 households, and 5,380 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (27/mi²). There are 8,639 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 58.34% White, 40.00% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 1.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,567 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.30% are married couples living together, 16.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 91.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,794, and the median income for a family is $30,796. Males have a median income of $26,180 versus $17,394 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,782. 21.80% of the population and 18.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.60% of those under the age of 18 and 21.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
